Years ago when the exchange rate was similar I purchased a new John Deere tractor in Canada, the dealer provided me with paperwork that all I had to do was drop (if memory is correct) at the Canadian customs on my way by and some additional paperwork that was dropped at the US customs on my way through back to the USA. Basically the paperwork dropped at the Canadian Customs closed the loop on their side that the tractor was being exported so the dealer didn't need to pay all the taxes. The drop at the US side allowed the government a few months later to send me a bill for the state sales tax. The tractor was easy as it was made in the USA. I purchased a Honda generator which I believe was made in Japan and I had to show the bill of sale on the return trip to the US at the customs and pay a tax as it wasn't made in the USA.

My bad. I have imported a used boat as well from the US and it was easy at the border, but I did have all my t's crossed and i's dotted.

Just bought a boat out of Canada. Wired money to Seller first. DO NOT bring cash. Need passport getting in and out of Canada. Need bill of Sale, titles/registration documents for hull and trailer. US Customs inspected boat and verified it was manufactured in the US. (Douglas Skater) No tax. Very simple. You are given US Customs documents as proof of legal border crossing. Without US customs paperwork you will not be able to get the boat titled. Do not meet the Canadian Seller in the US and try to do sale here. Big trouble.

Two keys points when coming to the Canadian border: bring a valid passport and don't bring any guns. Screwing up point #2 will probably get you arrested.

Randy pretty sure for the last 5-6 yes a passport is a must. F*#king terrorists created that crap used to be all a guy needed was a birth certificate and a valid drivers license.

It's only a few hundred yards across the Niagara River... less than that at Grand Island. My great uncle used to tie barrels of Canadian Whiskey on a long rope with a slip knot behind a little row boat and row across at a certain period in our history...
