Chaz, it appears you have drank from the cool aid, four strokes and they're power to weight belong on large contenders and yellowfins and recreational fuel savers . ..while this engine/boat setup is pretty damn cool and will more than likely haul a$$, the engine is close to 800lbs ....that's quite a paperweight to be hauling round. As far as my rig goes....I hand built the whole thing right down to the engine on back plus I've always loved the j hook pads, 80.1 is an honest number, its what im doin with what i built...I see quite a few guys here with some pretty outlandish speeds listed. I wished the man well with his project and stated my peace on our govt slowly taking away the two strokes I grew up racing.....so again , cool project and good luck with her

Dave - thanks man, we will find out where the wall is. It def has some heft and a large profile. I'm not worried about the weight, the top speed of a Stroker isn't effected much by weight. The wind resistance will be a factor for sure though.
Bodhi - if you want to turn this into a debate about 2 vs 4 stroke, your view about Uncle SAMs involvement and your preference(s) on your own build you are welcome to start a thread of your own about it. In the mean time I will help you with a fact, it is 668 not 800lbs. While still heavy you skewed it by a factor of 20% in favor of your argument. Using the same poor facts I could say it weighs 536lbs which about the weight of a 300xs.Last edited by npark; 12-28-2015 at 07:05 AM.

Vnemous - While unfortunate, I guess that's pretty common on an Internet board. The good news is hopefully the weather is going to clear up soon and Kurt will be able to get her out for the intro water testing to see what we have to work with. The engine is heavy but we put lithiums in to save 120 lbs, there is no external trim pump or additional steering rods...it's all integrated. We are estimating a little but all said and done the overall package is probably only ~20lbs more than a rigged 300xs with lead acids. Then we pulled about 3-4" of setback out of the normal Stroker/300 setup to balance it properly.
Cant wait to see what she does while being quiet and not burning oil in the process. Will keep everyone updated as soon as I know :-)Last edited by npark; 12-28-2015 at 09:21 AM.

Dude, that's killer and exactly how to look at it.
I would be concerned w/balance and/or C of G but it sounds like you have a good set up guy.
i know reducing set back is a great start but I wouldn't be surprised if you end up moving weight forward.
The large bullet on the gear case will try to carry the rear of the boat though.
Funny too on the weight argument, I'm an old OMC guy and spent the last 20 yrs hearing the Merc guys tell me my 450 lb motor was a pig
Its all relative.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Thanks instigator, there was a lot of thought put into the overall setup. Now we could have it all wrong lol but it wasn't just thrown together because it had to be a 400.
Kurt definitely knows his stuff and specifically with the Strokers, he's spent time on Lake X with Mercury doing CG work. We have 150lbs of lead shot to place and move around too. I figure it will find its way forward from most 300X/XS Strokers to help balance the weight of the 400 but only the testing will reveal that.

So how fast does your boat run with a 300XS? Is that the normal package? I'm not familiar with Strokers.

Hard to say Mike, there's not many with the new pad and this boat hasn't ever seen water. Dean has a stock 300XS and new pad in NM at 4300ft and its gone 102.x so far. I'd be willing to venture a bet that it would run 105-106 at sea level.

XB - you got a good handle on it. There have been a few non SSd 300X engines run 110+. Both Kurt and Bailey come to mind. Kurt ultimately went 116 with the generation 2 pad and a 300Xss. We just need some good weather now.
Corona - thanks. I bet that was an interesting time, those engines were massive for the day...now not so much lol.
Eli - that was a Champion with the twin Mariners. It was a very heavy hull with a lot of drag both in the air and the water. Thanks for the well wishes.

were actually 22 footers.... there were "supposed" ta be two of 'em although only one was ever seen that i know of... one had tha pro maxes and tha other "supposedly" had 260's (was never actually seen that i know of).... speeds were a LITTLE over tha top, boat ramp style... champion folks were at best being "champion folks" at tha time... saw tha one at tha boat show and again at Toledo Bend at one of tha bass tourneys same year... wasn't as impressive runnin' as it was on tha trailer.. all i heard was "it is a 22 ft. boat".... MAYBE low ta mid 90's but a dollar bill was no where in site......

Mercury quotes a dry weight for the Verados of 668 lb. Should 15 lb be added (8 liters of oil)?
Good luck with the project.
