was told this by an engine builder back in the eighties and have always had great results running a blended oil with a steel bore motor. The added bonus with the penzoil xlf is it alot cheaper too .

Castrol Biolube is (or at least to be) very popular with the offshore racers over here. Synthetic and biodegradable.

Amsoil is a pyramid marketing scheme. I would stay away from the product from that sole reason.

Royal Purple is what people who live in trailers put in their Camaros. I use their SAE30 in my lawn mower. Their marine oils are not very well known.

That PM came back saying that most of the name brand products are good, but the Mercury branded products are actually the best stuff on the market.

I'm sure it's possible that they have better profit margins on these products and he has some bias, but I've been using the Quicksilver and think it works well.
Lubrizol is indeed the world's leading manufacturer of TC-W3 additives.

Additives protect against rust, keep your engine free from deposits, impact the flash point of the oil, etc.

However, what lubricates an engine is the base stock. And that is where synthetic makes a difference over mineral.

Markus that gets me back to my question.... wouldn't synthetic oil be "better"(less wear) to use in a steel bore than a syn.blend after breakin? Thanks Gary

The original purpose of a synthetic base was to extend service intervals. Some have found performance gains from it. It is more stable. IMO the additive pkg is the principal determining factor for preventing wear. The "base stock" is just a vehicle for the additive pkg. NO expert in this science, just what I have read somewhere. Get the popcorn now.....

just before it goes wrong and you get metal to metal contact the synthetic can handle the higher temp better and castor oil is attracted to these parts but pretty much absent of any additive packages hence its a poor everyday solution.
Has always surprised me that being biodegradable is not part of the BIA specification?
