Mariner/Mercury 2.5L performance upgrade
Hello all, new member here I'm Dave. Looking forward to being here. I'm a member for years at THT so don't hold that against me.
Is anyone familiar with Brucato SVS? Any first hand knowledge of this upgrade would be greatly appreciated. My boat has the Mariner 2.5L EFI 150 and the boat is actually rated for 175. My outboard has very low hours on it and does run well. Just kind of thinking out loud and looking into something like this for an increase in overall performance.
Here is an article that was posted about the increase on the 150.

I'll be calling Brucato Monday for further information.

Thanks for any help you can offer

Hi Dave, welcome to Scream And Fly.
There are many, many members here that use, or have used the SVS, including us. It's an absolutely incredible upgrade that is very easy to install and has absolutely no negative effect on the reliability and running qualities of the engine it's installed on. I think the SVS is always a win-win situation since it will give a lot of benefits with no trade-offs. Pair the SVS up with the Brucato ACU and it will be even better.
You'll find many posts here on the SVS, and Tony Brucato is also an active member here.

Thanks Greg for that information. Would like to talk with Tony and probably will on Monday.
Does the SVS come with new reed valves? I wasn't sure by looking at it on their website. Or is there a preferred brand of reeds to go along with this system?
The article that I posted a link to was also talking about new exhaust. Makes perfect sense to me to allow any motor room to breathe. Can't exactly run up a hill with a bag over your face.

Nobody else has any experience with this performance upgrade?

The Brucato Svs allows the motor to breathe better, and Tony is a dealer for (our)CCMS brand composite reeds...the two complement each other well.An improved tuner in the exhaust is also a help, although not as big a gain.Milling the heads works well with this package, and there's not too much else to do untill you are willing to tear down the motor.A leakdown test is a good idea before the head work,as raising the compression on a well-worn motor will finish it off quickly.
We are dealers for Brucato, and can provide most anything you might want in the way of parts or services regarding your motor...give a call,Chris

Chris, I'll be calling you next week to discuss my options. My motor has less than 400 hours on it and runs like a top. I would like to get closer to 175 HP out of it since that's what my boat is rated for and not spend a fortune (buying a new outboard) to get there.

I 'might' have one of these. They work. Although they appear as such, they are not an $1800 piece of jewelry. The allure and 'initial payback' of jewelry subsides fairly quickly. SVS works every time you put your foot in it.
Also, unlike most patents, this one is a good read.

This might be an older outboard but there are less than 400 hours on it. Runs like new. I'm all ears and going to read the link provided. If I could get over 175 HP without putting further stress on this motor I'm very happy to do that.
Thanks For the replies and I want to do this over the winter.

do a leak down first so your not wasting $$$$ for 25 hp
a unhealthy engine with blow by is not a good candidate for hop ups
installing mod parts will make it worse , a rebuild and the right mods will make it run like you want

Agree,a well worn motor may still run great but not be a candidate for performance mods,a compression and leakdown test is in order. That being done you will have a better idea of the possibilities...if you need to rebuild to get things up to speed now is the time to do the mods that will give you the gains your looking for. With correct porting you can create your 175,or 200... Even more...still very reliable and well mannered,Chris

Yes I totally plan on doing the leak down before any mods are considered. Trying to find options available on this outboard. I'm pretty excited that this is one of the most sought after outboards in terms of performance upgrades.
I'm not unhappy at all with how this boat runs. It is max HP for 175 and it has a 150. I also need to do some test runs with the 21 Tempest. I'm currently running a 23 Lazer II and it's max RPMS are 5200 before it really starts to slip. The Tempest is a much larger wheel and I even have to take off the torque tab because the prop now hits it.
All in all this will be a fun project since I've not done any motor performance upgrades since I was a teen on cars
