Pretty sure all CLE. Gear cases had the drain hole in the front. The drain in the bearing carrier came out with the Sportmaster.

Gents, I suspect (as transomstand warned), the internals of my CLE are probably not stock CLE internals. It looks like my bearing carrier has been changed over the years to a version that does not include the rear drain. At this point for me I have little/no confidence that if I buy the CLE gearkit 44104A 7, that it will fit the rest of my internals. I don't yet have the experience to reverse engineer what I have.

one does one doesn't. shows a coupla different 4 hole cle's. guess it depended on which case was on tha table when it was built. hole in front, got regular. no hole got drain carrier! hi perf. did some strange things back when. tha very first cle I bought other than what came on tha factory motors had 2 ta 1 fishin' guts. was less than yr. old and he bought it new from merc.....just get it outta here attitude I guess.....go figure?
like we use say in construction when it came ta engeering...."confusion generates dollars".Last edited by tlwjkw; 08-14-2014 at 11:58 AM.

tlwjkw,
Thank you for the kick ass link:
https://webapps.brunswick.com/litera...atureSearch.do
h2oskiier30,
From your link I did not think that this was my lower as it does not describe "CLE"
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Me...-UP/parts.html
However, my CLE bearing carrier does NOT include the drain plug, where all digrams I have seen of CLE and Sportmasters show the bearing carrier has a drain plug.
I am curious if we are overcomplicating this?
Compatible lowers for the gearset 44104A 7 shows many different lowers:
http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/me...4104A%207.html
Including lowers, that do not have drain plugs in the bearing carrier?
such as:
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Me...ter/parts.html
But is still compatible with the 44104A 7
If my bearing carrier does not have a drain plug does that still mean that its possible that the 44104A 7 will not fit my current internals?
(I don't actually know what lower my bearing carrier came from)
Attached is a closer pic of my bearing carrier and some reference number I have not been able to cross reference.
Part # 816954 - "Something" cant make it out.. looks like a 3 but I can not find reference 816954-3
Thanks guys for all the quick attention. Learning lotsLast edited by paulhaig; 08-14-2014 at 12:19 PM.

Well ain't that special. In the illustration you posted for the Torquemaster, Mother Merc has omitted the picture of the drain screw, which in fact is used in that carrier. Geeeez
Ok, look inside your carrier and see if it has one or two bearings, then measure the bearing surface on the prop shaft. A 1-1/4" prop shaft will use a single bearing carrier, a 1-3/16" prop shaft will use a double bearing carrier.......unless it got changed to stock stuff.....ok, not goin there just yet.Living in the Freedom provided by Bud Conner and his fellow warriors.

CLE'S are the most changed up case" MERC EVER DID" ill add this! today its rare to find a"Late Model" cle with all hipo guts in it and even if you did the first versions of these 4 hole big window hipo cases with 11/4 prop shaft did Not have rear drains that was later there were case's at the end of the cle's production that did have hipo rear drain with 11/4 dia propshaft, earlier cles especially the first year or so had a MONSTER carrier with 1-3/16 diameter shaft& hard gears just like fishing motor stuff only harder then there came the 1-3/16 diameter hipo shaft with dual bearings stacked in the carrier( Petes info is right on) and a long bearing surface on the prop shaft and so on ive rebuilt a gob of cles and changed left-hand to right-hand when no one said it could be done !!The changes are numerous i do have a couple of the very early CLE carriers im going to send to the Smithsonian Institute for display with the rest of the Dinosaurs

Paul first thing you need to determine is the diameter of your prop shaft at the rear bearing surface if its a 1 1/4 diameter shaft then you need one type of gear set, if its a 1 3/16 diameter then you need another type of gear set period don't let all the numbers confuse you!!!! its either big prop-shaft big forward gear bearing or standard prop-shaft big forward gear bearing thats all the pertinent info you will need to go forward find that out and ill bail you out Bobby V
