What's faster? Hydrostream YT, XT or ZT bottom??

Here's an interesting thought or test! What's faster....the Hydrostream YT, XT or ZT bottom??? I know the YT is probably the easiest to drive being that the sponsons are about even with the center pod pad and they are part of the planing surface..but how bout the XT bottom with narrow sponsons that are higher than the center pod or...the ZT where the sponsons are lower than the center pod and act more like a tunnel???

The Xt is faster with added wieght ,carries it more efficient ,more like a vpad on all out running surface.

It would be interesting to take all three hull designs in the same length and run them with the same horsepower motor. It would make for a good writeup!

The ZT sponsons are not deeper than the YT, but they are wider.

There is no 20' YT or ZT version.
    There is no 18' XT.

Unless someone pays for tooling, we'll never know.

steve, you could almost have answered your own question(well 2/3 of it)!!! kevins boat (vegas xt) my boat(virage zt)-we purchased identical engines(came off twin eng boat), mine went 104 w/ no real work on the setup, kevins goes 102, with more effort and tuning and minor mods to the engine i got to 109, now kevins vegas could prob. go faster w/ some tuning

Do the different stages on the virage make a differance for speed or just handling???

Hey Charlie...I guess the comparison would be harder to figure out..there's a big difference in the weight/width/length of the Virage/Vegas/Valero YT/etc.
mmm...we should've slapped one of those motors on my Valero YT to see what would have happened!! .....though I don't think I would've wanted to drive a 17'9" boat at over 104 mph!!!!! I know the Virage ZT is a wider version of the YT bottom but the Vegas XT is completely different.... I still think it would be cool to try all the hull designs with the same power plant to see what would happen. We could even throw in the V-bottom to the mix!!

The last version (I think they called it a Turbo stage III) was supposed to be faster. Stream notched out the sponsons to reduce the wetted surface thereby reducing drag and allowing the boat to plane off sooner....

I could be wrong..but I think the center pod on Charlies Virage is higher than his sponsons....but it's been a while since I looked under his boat. Hey Charlie, chime in on this one! I know my YT sponsons are even with the center pod and I know the Kevin's Vegas XT has very narrow sponsons that are higher than his center pod.....

Just going off what I remember reading from this site... I believe a Viking YT has gone in the 110-112 range, Helmut in a Virage has gone 115.4? I believe and I'm not sure I've read of an XT hull breaking 110...

Each stage of the Virage got faster. The Turbo was faster than the non Turbo. We're only talking a couple of mph here.

the pad is slightly below the sponsons(i think 1/8"), there supposedly wasn't a big difference between the stage 1-3 versions(couple mph), not enough to justify modding a stage 1, incidentally the virage is 150 lbs heavier then the vegas, but the virage is way easier to drive and goes through rough water better

i would probably say(based upon my observations of the vegas/virage) that the virage is faster then the vegas, and probably due to higher hull efficiency, but they are both great boats

I wonder why they never applied the stage 3 virage bottom mod to the HST

I would agree with you based upon the fact that the Virage hull would be faster than the Vegas because it's an air entrapment hull and will create lift at speed. I did some research on the weights of the boats based upon 1988/1989 model years. The Valero V = 750 lbs, the Valero YT Bowrider = 800 lbs, the Virage ZT = 925 lbs, and the Vegas XT = 875 lbs. Pound for pound, horse power for horse power, it seems as if the Valero YT would be the fastest due to it's lighter weight, air entrapment (similar to the Virage ZT) and smaller length/narrower beam. Has anyone out there rigged a Valero YT (or Valero YT Bowrider/Vasseret) with big power????
