    Inline Block Preservation

I have this posted on one of the FB groups as well, but figured I'd inquire here also...

I have a couple of mid-80’s towers I have picked up over the years with low compression in one cylinder. My plan is to eventually rebuild them as a hobby. I have a source for the blind boring/honing, but have a few questions regarding maintaining the blocks/motors throughout the process. I tend to tinker with things over the course of months and even years. The motors are currently complete and stored on stand inside a heated garage. I fog the cylinders now and again through the plug holes and turn the flywheel over by hand.

I’d like to start tearing these things apart and getting the blocks ready for machining. What is the best practice for keeping the internal block and crank/components free of rust/corrosion both before and after machining? I’m anticipating the rebuild will progress over several months. Just want to keep the components as protected as possible after opening up the block and while everything is apart.

Just coat everything in oil and wrap in plastic? Any parts/areas I need to focus on aside from the cylinders and pistons. Any harm in storing the lower units with the oil drained?
