    Quick question!

If I wanted to glue/fasten an aluminum strong-back to a built-in poly gas tank, would 3M 5200 do the job? (the tank has settled with a bowl on the top, would like to lift it so water doesn't trap itself on top of the tank around the sending unit )

    Thanks for your replies.

Can you get access in the tank to get some nuts and washers on if you drilled and fastened, sealing everything properly? One or two bolts through centered on the bowled in spot.

Yes! I can take the entire floor out over the tank. I'm thinkin 2 pcs aluminum angle (1x1x 24") across the tank in 2 places fore and aft of the sending unit. expansion anchors sealed in tank with 5200 and setting the aluminum in the 5200 and sealing and re-setting screws in the tank. All the aluminum and anchors are holding is the weight of the tank top. trying to keep water from sitting around the sender.

Not sure about the anchors, if they will spread out inside the tank that would do it.

Yes they spread > 5/16 hole, 3/4-5/8 spread. What do you think about the 3M 5200? I'm thinkin I don't want to try to get it off afterwards. I appreciate your input.

I don't know about the compatibility of 5200 with gasoline. I do know that 3-Bond 1184 is compatible with fuel and oil, used for crankcase sealant. Basically like a Yamabond. I just bought a couple of tubes off amazon. I know GM dealer stocks 3-bond, as they use it for crankcase sealant.

    Good luck!

I think polyethylene needs to be “heat treated” for adhesives to bond to it
Pretty sure you run an open flame from a map gas torch over it
Not 100% sure on my part
    Just my $.02

Hey that's a good plan, use an open flame to heat a gas tank in your boat!!!!!

Back to your issue. Try removing the fuel sending unit. slip a 1" x 1" angle aluminum into the tank, screw down from top with sheet metal screws with fender washers, using mastik to seal the screws. I don't think 5200 will stick to poly, but 2 part epoxy might. . Make sure you have a good fuel filter before the fuel pump. If you pre-drill the angle, put a screw in a hole so to hold on to without dropping.

Get some roofing mastic and fill the low on the tank and forget all the hard stuff. Displace the water, no drama.

What are you doing this weekend, and do you have a map gas torch?

My sending unit is right in the middle of the sink hole. Good Idea though. If I make a plate that goes between the tank and the sender with a couple of ears on it, I may be able to lift the tank top with that. I will look at that possibility.

Whatever is used must be flexible or it wont stick at all. Never seen anything roof cement won't stick to. Non flexing stuff (aluminum) will crack the plastic.

Just my opinion, don't use anchors, the vibration and bouncing around will eventually wear a hole through.
what ever you use has to be flat. Also, I just checked Moeller marine tanks website, they say there is no adhesive that will stick to poly. hope this helps
