The facts will always remain the same. The big power pays the bills for the motor companies. They aren't going to make a 2 stroke anymore, and even if they did, the ones complaining wouldn't buy it. How many people complaining about the 4 strokes have 300xs on their boat? Very few.

I can't afford the big power 4 strokes, so I'm stuck with older stuff as well. But if I could I would have a big boat with big power.

I don't know why people need to argue one way or another. We are all performance boaters, no?

I know of a pair of 450's coming off a boat in the fall. Approx hours at time will be around 120hrs or so. They will have 1.5yrs left under warranty and asking price is $100k for the pair.

This is Mercury's newest release and its performance outboards at its best (the heart of what this site is about). This is the new world of performance unless you want to chase the Yamaha "buy and modify" program which is also very impressive and ends up being similar in cost. I agree that these motors are bigger and heavier but I have two twenty footers with them and we also have a new four stroke on my son's STV so they are still within core screamandfly members window of use.

Some of us would REALLY appreciate a "R" motor that weighs 400-450 lbs. Is it really that hard? RR

Joe, I was just bustin yalls balls. I like the fact that Merc is making those engines but what about the small power? I am sure they like selling 60k engines. Hell, thats at least 3-4 2.5's from a few years ago. What happens when a lot of the big dawgs that can afford a 1/4-1/2 mill rig ain't buying new motors? Will they remember us little guys that just want to re-power an old Hydro or Alli? Maybe? RR

It's not "hard".....It's just a small market/little demand for it. Businesses dont care what you appreciate, they care what you buy. "They should do this, they should do that" Well why don't you produce it, sell it, warranty it? We know you won't, but here you are telling someone else with someone else's money to do something you wouldn't dare take on yourself....If you think there is a gap in the market for something, well you just found yourself an opportunity right? Do something about it....Do a market analysis, put a business plan together, and pitch the idea.....Food for thought.

Here's some more food for thought. There is a demand but why give a shyt when you can sell 1 for the same price you used to sell 3 for? Maybe that has something to do with it? That's the problem with these huge corps. They don't give a fack about the little guys until they really need us. They'll need us again eventually & maybe they will pull their heads out of their posteriors. Or maybe not. My point is & I will say it again for you as well, don't completely kill the market for the customers that toted your ass for years. Us little boat guys ain't going away. We will make do with what we can find for now but Mercury needs to be careful & thoughtful moving forward because someone might just do "some market analysis" & take a huge piece of the cake that Merc could of had. I don't want to see that because I am huge Merc guy. But hey, I'm little ol me & you're evidently a know it all. RR

How many boat manufactures are out there (small performance) that build hulls in large numbers that can't handle a 225 V6 from Mercury? Does that number make it worth while for Mercury to chase? Of those hulls that are built or in need of re-power, how many will purchase a brand new motor? Mercury had 280s sitting in crates that were 10 years old (where were the buyers?)

I must have passed 300 bass boats and tri-toons with new (5 years old or less) four stroke motors having less then 300hp today.

My point being, just as you and I do with our business, they go after the large market segments. If that segment doesn't provide enough in sales then we search other areas for an extended customer base.

My old Allison was recently re-powered with a new 4 stroke Yamaha, I have a friend with a Hydrostream running a 150 merc. four-stroke (there are options).

If the market was there, someone would be catering to it.

    Joe

IDK, but I think the APX 200 V6 with lowered CR and blower and shift lower would do well , probably come under the weight of the V8 ? Nothing like that 500 but..

Would like to know more about the Hydrostream with a 150 four stroke on it. Any pictures you can share? You see very few of those hulls with four stroke power.

I don't understand why you would want to hang that much weight off your transom. I also don't understand why you would want to apply 500hp thru a right angle gearbox.
Seems much smarter to put big power in the boat, and transfer power straight out the back. I like my outboards for shallow water, but if I really wanted to go fast,.....wouldn't be on my boat.
