The 300xs is a fine motor, with great fuel mileage and strong performance. I am somewhat skeptical that the 4 stroke replacement will dramatically outperform the 2 stroke, but I will watch the new motors with great interest. After all, anyone that ran an OMC V-8 for 18 years as I did would be curious about a 4 stroke V-8.

I dunno guys, I used to live and breathe 2 strokes. I had a 2 stroke dirt bike, PWC, outboard, and worked for a 2 stroke engine company even. I got tired of working on my seadoo HX (2 stroke) so I sold it and got a used RXP (4 stroke). First time out, my mind was blown and I became a convert. I've since switched my boat over as well. The reliability, efficiency, ease of use, and power curve blow the 2 strokes away as long as they keep the weight and cost in check.

I did some quick math...the 300xs makes about 315 ftlb of torque at peak (at the crank). But 2 strokes have the unfortunate disadvantage of a narrow torque curve. Bmep math tells me that the new 4 stroke makes around 350 ftlb at peak. But the 4 stroke has an advantage of an inherently wide torque curve, so it beats the 300xs by 10% at peak but even more at lower rpm's (40%?). Up top, I suspect they do about the same since merc rates them the same.

So, you get more low end torque, more peak torque, less weight, better economy, better ease of use, lower maintenance, should-be better reliability, sweet v8 sounds, and it appears as though merc kept them cost competitive as well. What's the down-side here, other than nostalgia?

I sure do hope everybody runs out and buys a new 4 stroke, soon I’ll finally be able to afford to build a 225 pro max!!!

Any knowledge on higher HP 4.6 Mercs in pipeline . I would think since they weigh the same as xs a 15 inch 450 hp would be game changer

2 strokes make more torque than 4 strokes...... That's why they upped the displacement to 4.6L. Two strokes have more of a "target range" of RPM. With an outboard, both running in the 6200 rpm range, the 2 stroke will beat it everytime..That's why they go to such a big displacement, to make up for the loss of torque going to a 4 stroke.... Has anyone else noticed there is no 1.62 ratio offered??

Same weight, more torque across the powerband, same peak HP, what am I missing? Who gives a rats ass what the displacment is?

Its a moot point, the Mercury 2 strokes are done, I get that you don’t agree so it’s simple, don’t buy it. Evinrude will be glad to take your money.

And I’ve heard 1.62 and possibly even 1.50 is on the table down the road. Personally I’d love a 300R with a 1.50 SM.

The new 4 strokes seem pretty good, but I wonder what could have been done with the same inevestment in two stroke technology. We will never know.

i am loving our new 150 HO Etec.

The 998cc 4-stroke sled motor makes over 200hp and doesn't puke crank bearings 3 times a season....

Okay, okay... A couple of things.. I was just replying to the comment about 4 strokes making more torque than 2 strokes. They don't.. I'm not bashing, I'm just stating a fact. The 4 stroke snowmobiles that make 200hp are not naturally aspirated... I'm just comparing motor to motor.. I'm actually thinking of getting a 300R. I'm just waiting to see what options they come up with as far as lower unit gear ratios and price.

BRP can make two strokes, Mercury chooses not to. How is that the fault of the EPA?

I have seen the air in Shanghai. Some level of air quality regulation is good.

I will miss two strokes, more in theory than reality. Not selling mine.
