Stream valero, 285ish evolution 225 looper, Handling issues........
VALERO YT...10" setback, New dual rack nfb steering, top of prop shaft even with bottom,New 30 pitch hill prop, needed rework done by my prop guy. Boat is basically empty. Chine walks a lot until bow lifts out, then Goes through 90@6500,or so, and climbing fast easily headed past 100. Problem is when I let off, even gently, bow drops and boat hooks left then right wildly, then back and forth until about 40 and If I'm still in the seat and give it some power it will recover. It does not have solid mounts, but it is the venom model with stiffer mounts. Does anyone see a set up problem? Or is it a more seat time issue? Today was my first time on the water with it, and a hotfoot... Any advice will be appreciated.

Solid mounts should be installed in any performance application. Prop shaft looks a little low, but skeg also looks too small for running high and fast. Maybe go up a bit at a time and see how handling changes. I have seen merc lowers on omc motors, might be worthwhile to look into. Good luck and be safe!

Went out today with a passenger..... pretty much same thing, just had to go a little faster to get the bow out of the water, even at 70 if i lift, AS SOON AS THE BOW TOUCHES, hang on, here we go... I have driven quite a few chine walkers and thought I had a grip, but this thing is "Different"
When flying and the bow is up it's squirrelly, but manageable.

What trim angle are you running? Have you put a straight edge on the ctr running surface?First if it takes time to get the nose up IMO you may want to try a chopper or Mazco re3 as they carry the bow better. I also have concerns how the water is releasing from the prop and its effect on tail lift with no cav plate, I found on my boats that the cav plate does change handling. Even new the venom mounts are in my opinion to soft for fast boats, if you want to run a ridgid but not completely solid you could pin/shim you lower and upper mount or install those from a 3.6GT. A photo running at speed might also help.

Thanks for your response.... Bottom cntr pad is straight, first chine outboard does have 1" of built in hook starting 12" foward. I was starting out with too little trim at first, based on past experience, then I discovered how helpful it was to get it coming up right away. I can get the bow up petty fast, and control it as it accelerates. Roost is about even with top of cowl cruising 75mph, but if i hit it it's about 10' tall It's just the deccelerating part that's crazy!! The part about the cav plate makes sense, but the guy I got it from had it on a 102mph allison bass boat. (I saw video) I will get solid mounts. photo is straight off of pad with motor at current operating trim angle. Any comments on trim angle or motor height? Thanks Again... Ted

I am in the middle of pulling the pwrhead to do Solid mounts, and while lifting on it I can see both the tilt pivot bushings are worn, and the steering pivot bushings are the same.. THE MOTOR FLOPPING AROUND CAN'T BE HELPING. SEEMS OBVIOUS BUT IS THIS MY PROBLEM? I'm gonna get that all straightened out, try it, and then address the prop if I still have to run such a high trim angle to keep the bow up. I may not have to. On that hull more positive trim helps with the chine walking. My last boat, an Action w/a gt200 was the opposite, too much trim and it would walk. This YT hull is just a different beast. Maybe with everything tightened up it won't wanna walk so easily? and won't need so much trim.... Racer if you see this can you elaborate on the "water releasing from the prop and its effect on tail lift with no cav plate" Thanks for your time and knowledge.... IF ANYONE ELSE, ESPECIALLY YT OWNERS WOULD LIKE TO CHIME, IN THAT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. Thanks! Ted. aka oldschoolnc

Hi,
ive ranted on plenty about my recently former YT that I had for 4 years (my brother has it now), restored and went through everything possible with setup changes. The results? 55 MPH to start 104 MPH in the end with what turned out to be a worn out / stock 225 pm. First, I don't see 3 drain plugs in the back, has the boat been rebuilt and have you torn all the waterlogged foam out of the sponsons? Second, you are on the right path - you NEED solid mounts. A YT is no STV, but dialled in just right and it will surprise a lot of people in the straights and turns. Third, above 75 the hull should have enough natural lift that you start trimming down and tuck the nose, flat is fast. If your trimming up still to go fast, move some weight to the rear. I had to sky the nose with a 28" chopper, but a 32" Lightnjng ET pegged the limiter at 104, 102 with 2 adult males aboard. A 34" cleaver would have put it in the 107-108 range but sucked at all else.
PS is that a bow rider windshield on a closed now boat??
happy to help with any other pointers, look up some of my old posts too.
cheers,

Yeah, it is a covered over bow rider....I did the bottom and got ready to remove foam from sponsons, but core drilled several areas and all, surprisingly, was dry. I only put a floor back in in under the seats and throttle.... This is the one that was posted on here as free. core was already removed and hull was cracked. I'm a glass man from way back. I went with the "Drag" set up West biax and epoxy entire bottom,Then 24oz roving from transom to 6' forward. Then stiffeners, stringers and bulkheads... and no boat wasn't on trailer during repair.. I have to try it with the solid mounts, tilt tube and steering pivot bushings to see where I'm at..... THANKS FOR THE TIPS! Cool video...

PROGRESS REPORT.....With solid mounts installed, tilt tube bushings and steering pivot bushings replaced, motor raised 1.5". Lotta weight added to port side, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!
I lifted at 96gps@ 6800 and climbing strong!! I ran out of balls....lol. I need more seat time. This Evolution motor is strong!! not sure how fast to spin it, last owner said 7200? Might need a 32. Like I read. Once above 80 flat is fast.... trim is about neutral at speed...... and I lift real slowly. UPDATE 4/8 30p worked hill semi-cleaver, 7400 and climbing 103GPS= 9%
slip. Getting a hill eagle 4, 32 pitch.... Should be fun. I'm still learning how to drive this thing!!! I can say That I am officially SCREAMING AND FLYING! lol Thanks to all who commented on my post's here, and in tech. discussion.Last edited by oldschoolnc; 04-12-2018 at 07:20 PM.
