The whole synthetic oil cost going up thing drives me nuts, especially when you spend so much on a set of outboards and the manufacturer seems to do everything they can to make it more expensive over time to own them. I remember at first the Merc DFI oil was like $28 a gallon or something like $23 if I bought 3 at a time. When I said enough is enough and quit buying it 5+ years ago was up to something like $38 a gallon if I bought 3 and $42 normally at the local shop. Spark plugs is another thing like that, I can go online and order my NGK iridiums for like $11/each for a set of 6 shipped to my door; NAPA gets like $14/each (reasonable); West Marine gets like $18 (ya OK fine); dealer gets like $28/each - WTF, who is making all that $$ off the freakin spark plugs?
When I switched I went to Pennzoil XLF exclusively in my Opti 150's and it seems to be a good fit, similarly others I know up here w/ Opti's do the same and that's why I went that way, one guy who recommended it had 2500 hours on a set of Opti 150's w/ original powerheads.
Walmart carries XLF which helps with availability and keeping the cost down, haven't had to buy any this year but seems to run somewhere around $18 a gallon normally, sometimes they have a sale on it and I've bought it as far down as $14 and change in the last few years. I run through about 30 gallons a season.
What's funny is toward August at some point the Walmart supply seems to get low as all us carbon-footprinters start putting a dent in their stock - it becomes like a run on the banks, panicky 2-stroke owners find their local Walmart is out and begin scouring other stores, working their way inland, and instead of the usual couple gallons begin buying up the whole shelf at a time to make sure they don't run out
.
Jon

There worse than Crack dealers those cartels that run the oil monopoly. Its a real shame no one has the balls to band together and oust these criminals. They are responsible for driving up everything when there should have been record low consumer goods the past 3 years. A perfect example of why crime pays. These criminals are the worst of the worst and get away with this sort of crap on a large scale all the time. $100+ per barrel pricing still at half the cost. Now that is a market we all should be tapped into. There is no other business with these high of returns other than selling drugs. lol
