Any way to tell the blocks apart from outside did drag have boss for altanator?

The Drag motor had the alternator boss starting mid year in 97. The heads are the best way to tell. What casting number are the heads and what two letters are stamped at the case half split

What letters at the split make it one or the other? I think most drag blocks with bosses don't have them drilled.

QQ should signify a 280. At least that's what my 280 has. I'm guessing the alternator bosses are drilled and tapped. Funny thing is that some of the early Drag motors that had the bosses were drilled and tapped, no idea why Mercury did it unless they just did every motor coming off the line before they realized they could save that step on the Drag motor. I've seen some date stamp 97 models like that but by 2001 that had stopped so if yours are drilled and the letters QQ are on there I'd say it's a 280

Ok thanks the guy calls it a drag. 280 i figured it was a 280 with drag electrics just wanted to be shure because guy knows so little about the motor thought i mite have found a steal lol
