Sierra water pump kit for 1995 2.5 Carb???

Is the Sierra kit any good? I've heard it is and you can't beat the price. Is 18-3517 the correct Sierra kit part number for upper housing and impeller/gasket kit?

My serial # for some reason doesn't work on any Mercury parts site. I have a 1995 Mariner 2.5 liter 245 Carb motor. When I navigate to the model on Mercury parts site there is not kit listed anymore just the individual parts so I can't find a Mercury kit # to cross reference.

when the plastic inside the impeller lets go you will smoke your motor. Dont cheap out on a water pump. Its life or death for your motor. JMO

What plastic are you referring? Inside the impeller is metal.

mike i have been experimenting with the sierra WP kits in some of my own stuff and a few customers that are value conscious for about 3 years now and all i can say is so far i have yet to have a failure....10 years ago was a different story...however i will also say i do water pumps every season on most of my customers except for some who go 2 seasons so as for long term i cant say....on the stuff thats mine i routiinely dry fire the motors befor i go to the ramp and on my 2.5 200 checkmate i would trim and jack till it had no WP all the time and it lived...Maybe i was just lucky...

Wayyyy back when, the 1st (as I remember) aftermarket vendor was Sierra. Their ignition items, coils I believe, just didn't "cut the mustard" with marine dealers. It took alot of years before most techs would take another look at aftermarket. Now, most dealers stock both OEM and aftermarket parts. I have used both Mercury and Sierra water pump kits in my 2.4. I do inspect and (therefore, change either just the impeller if not the whole kit) each year...OK, sometimes every other year but Sierra pump kits are exactly like Merc's. If it wasn't for the white plastic vs Mercs black there would be not noticeable difference anyways. AND, BTW, did you know you can get Merc impellers for the V-6 with the plastic hubs and also with brass hubs?? Anyone wanna guess why??
