Did anyone mention you needed a new dealer/shop/tech a fresh mind/eyes etc?...
Glad you got it figure out but IMPO at the end it was not Mother Mercury who dropped the ball here.
It is also sad to see a thread like this bashing Mercury products and started as "JUNK" when it was something missed or touched by someone.
Either way, GL moving forward and go have fun now.......

PS; I would suggest to leave this thread up so maybe someone else could benefit or easily learn from it!

So in the 5 months you had it in the "shop" only the Mercury Service Tech (I guess) looked at or touched it? Glad its fixed but any Mercury Tech, actually any competent marine tech, would have looked at plugs and gone threw the engine harness to make sure everything was connected 4 months and 29 days ago.

Sort of where a guy should always start. Starting to see a lot of this, hook up a scan tool and if it says all is good it must be. Have to deal with the basics first.

This guy has WAY more patience than I do. This would have been over WAY before any of the extra stuff and expense went on. Day 5 if it does not work, time to take action. Anyway, good luck figuring it out the long way.

only mercury......so switched lower units and you guys were right about 2 mph and 200 rpms difference.............so instead of going back to the dealer i decided to look for the basics that maybe mercury was over looking..... found 3 connects not snapped all the way together and.........snapped these back together...pulled the plugs and they looked horrible.......replaced all 6 plugs in it and bam.,.........6600 rpms and 70 mph....keep in mind this is same motor mercury said would never push my boat past mid 60's.....and i have room with a little prop work and tuning and it'll run 73 to 74.......now what makes me made 5 months later i find some connectors loose, and replace the plugs and it runs crazy.....so why didnt they try this to start with????

Jeezz. Sorry ya had so much GDBS trouble to find out something so damn simple. Now ya know why "I hate electrical crap"!Glad ya got it fixed! Now "go fishing"!

Talked to PropGods Ken yesterday and he told me you got it figured out. I think he had been telling you it wasnt running on all cylinders.

The plugs just looked a a little blacker then they should have been with fuel injection, I'm sure mercury since they looked good didn't replace them....they seem to not try anything at all until it's broke

How does a 4-stroke fuel injected engine foul a plug in so few hours? There isn't even a break-in period where it might run a bit richer. OK OK on my 2-stroke EFI 250 Merc stuff ( crude injection-- those champion 77's were pretty bad about fouling with the wrong TPS setting and pre-mixing at 40:1). BUT this is a 4-stroke... I don't get anything... More to the story.
Glad you got it sorted out for goodness sakes. Toffen was touting that 350 SCI as a strong runner, knew something had to be wrong. I would have lost the farm betting on the ECM.. Especially with it wigging out at 6250 and always showing a heavy load... I might have been tempted to grenade that badboy.
Had an 2001 Opti 225 - Motor would die from time to time, drop a cylinder at speed, crazy and sporatic. Merc sent a new harness and installed it, problem solved.

One of the connectors that weren't snap totally jn was an ecm plug....which would make sense why jt was freaking out, and maybe why the plugs where black

I called shop they said that all the connections were check but then mercury sent down a guy to look it all over and had it all looked at....I'm really wondering if maybe during the break in time it fouled up the plugs or somethjng....we are going to do a bunch of idling this weekend to make sure it isn't some fueling at slow speed issue
