Whats the Race motor cost? The skeg must have been modified on the race boat because it is swept more than the stock photo.

So after tax and rigging 100 grand for 800hp and 1400 lbs. Hmm pretty sure i can get 1000+ hp for a lot less money and weight than that.

Powerhead on both motors are the same.

Ya no doubt! I also think its a cool setup. i love the way they look just think they could have done better with the hp and weight. Everyone of those boats will be gone and they will have to build new boats around the 400ROS i guess. if ya got the cash flow thats no big deal ofcourse. in racing everything has gotten bigger and bigger over the years.

Go to the Keys and count the Uber center consoles you see. Been saying that for yrs.

Theres a dealer in Islamorada that at any time will have a 1/2 dozen quad engine boats, 6 or 8 tri engines and probably a full dozen twins. All new, all top end.
    My questions are always:
    A. How can you afford that inventory/overhead??
    B. How many do you actually sell??
    C. and how often do you turn your inventory?

A point missed by many is, the cowling says 400 instead of 350 regardless of performance which many won't notice/care.
But when they pull into the yacht club, condo, hotel, tiki bar, gas station, storage lot....., and he has triple 400's instead of 350's like everyone has now...

And has been said many, many times on this site, how many on here will actually buy a 400r??
One thing for sure, not enough for Merc to build them.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

    Hating in general.

We have it so good, we can sit back and discuss motors that we can or cannot afford!
    Will or would not buy.
How fast we can go, or how cool we look.

This is all very serious stuff, its "developed world problems".

So, 400 HP. Everyone has a choice. Buy it or build it.

Any Mercury Racing product is made with care, and their is a dedicated set of personnel waiting to help you go faster. No other OEM marine propulsion company has a racing department. Be very thankful they still make racing products. If you want to go fast with a previously manufactured Mercury racing product that is great too. Keep all the Mercs running.

There is absolutely no need to Criticize the 400R or the people that built it, or those that buy it.

There seem's to be a private jet , either taking off or landing at our little airport about every 20 minutes ... i guess I missed the memo , but there has to be more than a couple people out there with money than they can spend in a life time ..

Dan Lawrence went 122 with his old narrow tunnel Doug Wright and a pair of 300xs motors this week, so again, 124 with an additional 200 hp is NOT anything great. Doug's boats are great and are for sure the fastest thing out there when someone takes the time to set them up properly. When the 400s start to get real boost put to them and or a smaller case that will live then they will be something to get excited about.

That is the old xcat prototype motor they used a 3.0 sporty but they couldn't keep them alive under the 400

Agree with JPEROG above that these 400s are new and have a lot of upside but, weight and price sure excludes a large segment of the market.

Real boost put to them??? I believe they are at 20+ pounds now according to Merc tech I spoke with. That is an insane amount of boost to run on pump gas with out detonating. The 400R engine is making more horsepower per liter than just about any production car in world. It is a 2.6L, 2600cc or 158 cubic inch engine making 400 HP. That like a 350 Chev engine making 872 hp on pump gas and have a warranty. I do not think there is lot left to be had out of that 2.6L engine and have a warranty and run on 93 octane.

    Yep. Kinda my point.

Used to call on a boat builder by you that said his customer (78' sport fish w/twin 1100 hp V-12 or 16 diesels, props were 5 blade 36" x 36"s!!!) would land his chopper on the vacant lot next door and bring him a sack of cash.

Or the houses on what I called millionaires row along the Indian River just south of Sebastian. Favorite one was water front two sides, pool, fountain, statues in the yard, boat on a lift etc. Landscaper friend told me they were probably spending $5K a month just on grounds maint. That's $60K a yr!!
In nine yrs, I never saw anyone there.

Still loved the boat being built and that house. Im always happy that those people are successful enough in their lives to be able to afford those toys.

Same with the huge multi engine center consoles that pulled in beside me in the Keys. Works of art! I always told every owner I thought that.
If you're smart you can normally pick something up from each.
