    Glastron Overhaul

    I'm replacing transom, floor and stringer sections in my boat (why be on the water when you can be up to your armpits in fiberglass dust?)
    I'm figuring on using exterior grade plywood on the floor and transom but what kind (species) of wood should I use on the stringer sections?

    It's a '73 V-173 w/ 115HP I-6 Merc. Nothing very interesting but it's paid for!

    Oops, I just sent a '70 V-176 Swinger to the Great Marina in the Sky (local landfill) Probably could have snagged a few 'Tron accessories for you had I known.

    The wood choice would be "fir" as in Douglas Fir for stringers. You don't want pine anyplace. Transom made from two pieces of exterior fir 3/4" plywood , glassed together with a couple layers of 1 1/2 oz. chop mat jucey with resin. Screw it together, 1 1/4 " staples, clamps or whatever. Cut out a simi-circle where the drain plug goes so you can put another drain plug in without hitting wood or cutting through anything but solid glass, to keep transom dry. Look at the splashwell and see if the engine blocks the splashwell hole. If it does, take this opportunity to relocate the hole to a drainable location, unless you want to maintain it "as manufactured". Keep that big shop vac running when the cutting/gringing is going on, less to itch you know. Good luck!

    wood

    I'm not any wood expert, but I think I read a while back that there's a big difference between "exterior grade" and "marine grade"-- The lack of gaps in the wood ply, right?

    Lightbulb Lorax...

    Fir for stringers and MARINE GRADE for transom and floor!!
    The regular ply has knots in it where the marine grade the knots are filled and the ply's on Marine grade are glued together with a diff. kind of glue than the reg. ply!! CYU TUG

    I think this picture will explain why I did what I did. The Glastron was kind enough to donate it's motor before departing. Notice the 'Tron in the background. This picture was taken just a few days before it met it's demise.
