    Gambler w/ 200 SuperMag consistent Hub Failure/Exhaust Leak/Timing

    I have a 94' Mariner SuperMag 200 EFI, 20in Torque Master (OG205121) on my Gambler Intimidator 193 that has spun 2 hubs in open water at 5k-6k in the last 4 months (6-8 trips). Prop is a mid 90's 25p Trophy with a circular internal barrel w/ a pressed hub. I can't replace w/ a Flo Torq. I've had the boat 16 months and have put maybe 20hrs on it. Immediate post purchase, injectors were flow tested/cleaned/calibrated, new fuel filter, fresh NGK plugs, fresh CC Carbon reeds, new fuel lines, full LU service including fresh seals throughout, and new thermostats. Motor is unmodified/stock, boat has been garage kept since new and owned by older gentleman that I dont suspect got after it.


    I have been told via a Gambler FB group that is suspected that higher exhaust temp could be cooking the hubs, is this accurate? It was also suggested that my timing could be too advanced near WOT causing the increased temp. I have noticed that the water that it pees out seems to be hotter than it used to be, and could potentially be taking longer to start peeing but both of these I cannot confirm to be 100% true vs what it was 6 months ago (I just don't fish enough).

    I also noticed a burnt oily film on the back side of the water jacket flowing down from thes 2 bolts, would this indicate an exhaust leak or? Any correlation to the hubs failing? See below picture and click for full size, not sure how to rotate but the left side is the top.


    Any insights would be appreciated, thanks. Also if anyone is near Lake Murray and is willing to let me try some props I'd appreciate it, currently running 6-6.1k @ 75/76.

    I've had trouble with press in hubs also, I think it's the nature of the beast. I've passed on buying a couple nice wheels because they were press in hubs. Even had a brand new yamaha drag that I had problems with hub slippage.

    I like to run temp gauges on my boats, they are very simple to install, and many of my engines already had the sender in the head.

    As for your water leak, there is a gasket under the exhaust divider/cover that may be compromised, or the bolts have been known to loosen up after twenty, thirty, or more years. I don't think that would have anything to do with prop hubs, unless it's gushing water

    If you're worried about timing, check it, or have someone check it. This can be done at cranking speed

    Your motor will melt long before the exhaust melts the prop hub. The leak in the exhaut devider has nothing to do with it either. But you do need to change that gasket. There is either something wrong with your prop. Like the hub spun so much that the barrel is worn oversize or maybe has a crack. Or the prop shop you are using is installing the hub wrong. I know they are supposed to be glued in. Not just pressed in. All my props have pressed in hubs and I have vever had one fail. I am wondering if your prop shop is using quality hubs or are they using cheap Chinese crap.

    Thanks for the welcome and info guys.

    Those bolts seemingly have gotten loose over the last 31yrs, I was able to get about 1/4-1/2 turn on them with one hand, so hopefully that will solve that issue.

    I'll have to look into a temp gauge, I'd love to run one. My Phoenix w/ a 18' ProXS had the Smartcraft gauge and it was great. As we all know that is far too modern for the ole SuperMag.

    The shop did glue it in, I didn't run it for a day, maybe 2 and hard idled 1500-2k for probably 500yds before I got on pad, kept at or below 4500 that day. Certainly could of been just bad luck/bad hub. I'll take it to them next week and have them replace and see if they can tell me if high heat was a contributing factor, but I imagine the heat caused by pressing it out would outweigh any potential exhaust heat damage.

    I'll take compressed air to the water line that runs into the mid shaft as well to see if its been clogged.

    they jus don't make 'em like they use too.. i ran a40's, small hub trophy's seems like forever without a problem.. newer yamaha drags, not so much....

    I have run into this a couple of times. Usually it is in the exhaust plate, under the p/head. You will have 4 little holes that let water into exhaust cavity to cool it, & the prop hub. Pull p/head & you will see it. Probably pee gravel stuck in it. Do not make holes bigger, cause it can dump too much water. & cause a power loss. The water takes up too much space in the exhaust. Water can't be compressed, it is a liquid.
