    1978 Mercury 1500 XS

    1978 Mercury 1500 XS Outboard

100% restored 1500 XS. Serial numbers matching mid and block – 4868852.

Motor was completely disassembled; everything stripped to bare metal and repainted with Acrylic Urethane automotive paint. Standard bore block got light hone, 6 new pistons and rings , all seals, gaskets, bolts and rod bearings. Every fuel line is NEW, carbs, fuel pump rebuilt with Mercury parts. New wiring harness, reconditioned stator, new plug wires, has the GOOD potted mercury trigger in it. Trigger wires are in excellent shape. Everything on this engine is perfect. Lower unit disassembled and inspected. New seals and water pump. Lower unit held 15 PSI for 24 hours. XS 6-hole low water pickup with a torque tab installed on the skeg. Solid mounts on the midsection. New Decals all around. all screens replaced with fine mesh stainless steel screen.

I built this motor for myself, and it has been sitting in my living room for 4 years waiting for the right boat. This explains the dust and desk in the background. It was oiled and turned over every 6 months.

I have found another project and as much as I hate to, going to sell this beauty.

It has never had gas in it yet. Upon a $500 deposit I Will start, tune and start to break this motor in for one hour. Complete break in procedure will have to be done by the new owner.

Don’t ask me to ship unless you are willing to pay for my time, materials to crate it and you make all the shipping pickup arrangements. Last full motor crate I built cost around $500 in total.

Will answer all questions. Many more pics are available of the rebuilding process.

$6500- Low ballers don’t bother to contact me

Sold AS is Where is in Rockledge Florida 32955.

Motor stand and dust not included. Pictures clearly show the block serial number and the "J" stamp as well.

Great restoration job Tom! Asking price worth every penny! I give it a 9 out of 10 rating if it wasn't for the trim tab on the skeg. It don't belong (albeit functional). My brand new 1500XS right out of the box fom Mercury in 1977 was $1400!

    Hey Tom
seems I’m having technical difficulties getting in touch. I guess that. What happens when you’re in your 60’s! In any event I’m very interested in your motor and would like to discuss the details. Please shoot me an email and I’ll send you my number. Thanks in advance!

I'm not going to ask why this engine didn't make it on to the DelCraft? Too valuable? Blow over risk?

The Delcraft set its record, was 1970 high point champ with a 1350. That is what is on it.

Unless buyers are specifically interested in a 1500XS, there's a lot of vintage Merc engines available in this category right now (boxcarbilly) including a rare Merc T2X and stacker.............sounds like two more 1500XS will appear here soon.

Moved the motor out of the living room, gave it a bath and here are a few better pics of it. Price is $6000 including crating. All shipping arrangements are on the buyer. Ships from Rockledge Fl 32955..

Do not plan to put gas in it and run it until i have a deposit.

    thanks

I have one of tom's engines. Can't say enough about the quality of the restoration. the shipping crate was well built. made it to upstate ny without a scratch.
