From looking through the parts catalog It looks like the first 200's were vertical reed. Up to serial number 06073192. Between 6073192 and 6203990 were 7 petal reed. Then they went to 5 petal above that. But all the 200's were a 2.4. They all call for a 3 3/8" piston. The early 175's were 2.0L serial # 6618750 and below use a 3 1/8" piston. Above that use a 3 3/8" piston.

tha first production 200 i ever had i bought was a '82 200 in '83 with about 10 hrs on it and it had horiz junk (best i remember)... so there's that......... but i say again itsa MERC soooooooooo....... no tellin' at that peticular time due ta tha motor design change.........

if ya think 'bout it an "82 200 with vertical makes sense.. they were still crank rated in '82 and they didn't offer a production 175 for that year.. so vertical ona 2.4 block could have been crank rated at 200... mine could have been an '83 jus as easy with my memory...

From the serial numbers 1978-1981 200hp was vertical reed. Only 1982 was 7 petal horizontal reed. And 1983 on was 5 petal horizontal reed. This makes perfect sense. They had a 7 petal 225 in 1980-1981. That became the 200 in 1982. Still 7 petal. Went to 5 petal in 1983. Just like the parts manual says. The parts manual seems pretty generic. And some sections are. But in the reed section, in the earliest serial number range, the 175 shows only vertical reeds. The 200 shows all three styles. 5 petal vertical and both 5 and 7 petal horizontal. The 225 in the archive catalog shows only 7 petal horizontal. (picture shows 5 petal but the part# corresponds to the 7 petal reeds).

Maybe it was 200... at the crank... before they started prop rating?

...yes. correct. what he has is a early 80's vertical reed chrome bore 2.4. excellent motor in its day. these were the "blue stripe" motors, as we used to call them in that era. there was a 175(2 litre), a 200, and a 225. all great engines...

I just helped a guy fix a vertical 2.4 200 82 model , also depending on month it was built dictates the year I believe. Jan-june and july-dec would be next year, Like automotive stuff. As far as I know and seen, haven't seen a horizontal 5 2.4 200 b4 83 , but we r talkin bout merc here , there may be a few floating round

there was always at least one vertical reed 175 around that could and did run circles around tha horizontal 200's all thru tha '80's.. luck of tha "production" draw....... one in our crew had one ona "varmit" no one with ANY production (even a 225) motor could touch......

seems like in tha '82, '83, '84 years were a little confusin' with all tha changes merc was makin' with tha block, oiler, clamp and trim changes... could get a little confusin' to some of us OLDS...........
