Phantom 25 - upgrade from 450R to 500R
Hi,
Hope you are well.
Its my 5th season with my 450R now. Still running Max 5 ST 15,25 x 27 with great performance. The warranty expire next summer, and I will try to sell my 450R and upgrade to 500R next year.
My current 450R has a 20 inch leg and Sportmaster straight skeg. I have installed an oil cooler to keep the steering oil not too hot. I consider to buy a cambred skeg for the 500R. I run my 450R propshaft 1,5-2 inches above the bottom, and I wonder if the R-Drive Sport lower unit is the correct choice for the 500R? The R-Drive seems to have a smaller skeg than the R-Drive Sport drive. My Phantom 25 is 40 years now, and straight V. No pad or steps.
The Phantom 25 runs approx 94 mph at 6250 rpms with the Max5 15,25 x 27. If my calculations are correct, I can use the same prop on my new 500R, spinning it to 6600 rpms? Estimated top speed around 98-100 mph.
Have a great day!
Cheers Toffen

Toffen is an OG for sure. Love the fact that it is the same hull going through multiple "revivals"

Do you run a straight skeg because it's a true "V"? Guess I was always of the assumption a single engine application was always a swept skeg. Learn something every day.
Awesome rig, btw.

Hi!
Thank you for nice words
The season in southern Norway tend to be June to August, but we use the Phantom May-October. Normally putting on it 120-150 hrs a season
I am a little uncertain about cambrered skeg or not, but I have experienced boiling hot steering oil when running wot for a long time. I swopped to Mobil One hydraulic oil, and added a oil cooler. It helped.
Does the cambered skeg steal speed at cruise? I had a torque master lowerunit on my Promax 300X back in the days. It worked nicely and the max propshaft height that time as 2 inches below. Max speed then at 75 mph.
Do you know if I have to buy lots of adds on to make 500R work? I hope not since the 450R is close to the same engine.
Cheers Toffen

The straight skeg in a single will be a burden on the steering system. Those with smaller boats who have switched from the 450 to the 500 have had very mixed opinions mostly due to the larger bullet of the R drive (5.9"). Definitely not conducive for small boats. They do run great on the big twin cats for sure.

Toffen,
Nice boat , nice thread , smart move selling the motor before it's out of wty.
Can't speak about the rest of the world, but here in Florida the bottom dropped out of the value of those when they brought the 500's out right after releasing the 450's.
The "village idiot" strikes again. I've never owned an "XS" so it would be hard to have blown one up, let alone done a big bore unit and blown it up.
I'm going to log back off now. And I'm taking my new password with me. If you want to post as me again use : littlejimmiesgay that should get you in my account
