Hello Gents, i have a new to me 1986 Johnson GT200 and need direction please
Ok so adding photos didnt go so well.
These engines seem to be covered/ buried in conflicting info& lots& lots of claims of differing hp at the prop.
I want to educate myself as much as i can on these 2.7's& am getting stumped on google because these outboards are just old enough that the info still available is very sparse..
I have not even cleaned it up, bought it from original owner, been sitting 10 years or so. Im cleaning the motor only, taking it to my certified OMC mechanic in Winfield MO (Steve's Outboards) and having him give it the full work over and long term winterization/ fogging. Im going to mothball the motor in my garage and put it on an appropriate fast aluminum hull for river running later on.. a Sea Ark or equivalent very robust hull.
Can you all point me to a resource on these 2.7L motors, any/ all resources, forum links, web pages, books etc. I have a 94' 3L GT200 but from my limited research this 2.7 would eat my 3L, so when i found this one for almost nothing it was a no brainer.
Thanks!Last edited by 1986 X-Flow 4; 03-22-2025 at 08:32 PM.

When buying parts make sure your buying parts for a looper engine, not a crossflow engine.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

Take the VRO oil injection off and pre mix your fuel. There was a run of these engines in 1986 that had problems coming out of the hole on deep sitting bass type boats. Problem was so bad that they offered to replace the big bore carbs under warranty.

Pretty sure the heads were the stock heads that had .020 or .025" milled off. cant remember exactly how much. On mine the numbers that were normally cast on the casting had been ground off and new number was stamped on with number stamps. also had the big bore carbs.

The heads off the 86-87 have smaller pockets. They should add a good 20 lbs compression or around there. Same goes for the V4s
The 88s and up are lower compressions, so those heads are a good hop up. Disconnect the oil injection and probably the only problem you will have with those motors are the electronics. As for octane, I only use 91 Shell for all my two strokes because here at least in Ontario, is the only one that I can get with no ethanol.Last edited by sharpeye Mike; 04-09-2025 at 07:13 AM.

I dug the old 2.7 GT heads out. As it turns out the original casting numbers were not ground off as I said previously. They are still there but below those numbers they are stamped "200H"
I know they were original to the 86 200GT because I had the APBA spec sheet for the motor.limited skills
