Mercury would continue with their IOGP program until about 1993 but was not allowed to use the F1 title (Champ instead). Mercury would continue to pursue the OMC V8 guys with their high winding 2 litre engines going thru piles of pistons in the process. The title of F1 in the USA struggled for years to come while F1 had a more stable climate in Europe (UIM). F1 continues today in Europe but is seldom seen in the USA. Take notice that Woods, Molinari, Wik and Sanders, Posey and Seebold are not in the listing.

Molinari retired from F1-V8 racing after the 1984 season. He came back for one race (picture #18) in Italy 1985.

I can still remember this guy in his "Viking Spirit" winning the Orange Bowl 9 Hour without a relief driver. I think he may have won the 250 mile race at the same regatta.

If my memory serves me correctly, Nordskog and Threilkeld (sp?) were the only guys who used OMC power on Switzer wings?

The only time I ever saw Bob Nordskog drive was at the 1966 Orange Bowl Regatta. I was in a single engine outboard boat in the 9 Hour and he passed us like every other lap. The "Viking Spirit" was a beautiful inboard marathon boat and it ran perfectly all day. Nordskog's posture in the boat was very distinctive so you could see it was just him all day long.

In later yrs he was building his helmets too and they were tiny compared to standard, so could see that too.

Did it to reduce bucketing in the case of a sudden, high speed swim but the APBA fought him in it because it was not Snell approved.

    I was a fan.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Restoration just about completed, the boat is from around 1980 and the engine is from 1973.

Not sure about the USA, but here in Canada OMC had a yellow 'Wing' that I know both Dave Norton and Spencer Dunn drove...although at the National Championships in 1971 Spencer spun out in the 1st corner and Andre Savard went right over top. Good thing Spencer (who was not very tall) was deep in the cockpit as one of Savard's engines went directly over top of Spencer.
