    beware of rollers

We get a lot of cabin cruiser traffic on our lake and on the big lake south of us. Last week the lake looked calm and beautiful every night, and I took my SS2000 out every evening. There were no long speed runs though. There were too many rollers from long out of site cruisers. I was able to enjoy the acceleration behind islands, where I knew there were no wakes. The weather was amazing last week. Some years mid September here is special. This week, not so much.

It’s not always easy to see them either. I’ve already hit a few at pretty high speeds. I can let out and skip over if I see them but the one day it was quite choppy to begin with and made reading the waves very difficult and I was trying to keep up with other much bigger boats. Hit hard at 60 or so and took the biggest boat flight of my life.

Outasite had good advice that is worth repeating. He said he takes a mild rip one way to get his boat set how he likes it and to check the run is clean of issues. Then he leaves his settings the way they are, turns back around and makes his run the same route back. Sounds like a nice drama free way to get it done

thats the problems on the lakes. everything looks good so you bump the cruise to 100 and as soon as you get there you're skipping over rollers. i have an stv so when it comes to boat wakes i can get into big trouble real fast. especially with the cruisers and wake boats. rivers are a little better.

Today is Friday, so there are even more rollers as the weekend people are here. Worse, by the time I give our dog her post dinner walk, it's getting dark and I'm not getting the boat out. It's nice out as you can see from the picture, but a bit dark to be launching my boat. Maybe tomorrow morning will be calm again. Mornings are best for skiing and going fast. When I do a long fast run, I first do the route at 50 to check for rollers. Always.

That's why I like rivers. Rollers die very young in current.

Always hated lake boating cuz of that. Rivers are much safer.

I left Whitey's restaurant recently about the same time as their big Friday Bass tournament started. The Bassers thought they would try me out in the river. Soon I had left them behind running 90+ and stupid me did not slow down once they were far behind. I missed seeing a 4' wakeboard boat wake on the smooth river. It was like hitting a concrete wall and everything in the boat ended under the front of the bow. It also ripped out my Battery box and twisted the metal arm that holds my Garmin. I am glad I don't have false teeth, or they would have launched...

BTW I just had the light adjustable {UV LASER tuned] cataract Implant lenses so I have 20/15 vision, both near and far, so it was stupidity.

1978 I'm In my brand new 18 Hydrostream Viking,

My girlfriend stayed at the boat ramp, she was afraid to go in the boat from the ride the day before,

So a 300 ft monster ship was making a nice monster wake, so I got perpendicular to the wave to jump it like I always do,

Well, I thought about my girlfriend telling me how scared I make her, so I backed out just as I was climbing it, the bow dropped and my new windshield was bent backward and I was wet. It was early spring and that water was
    COLD Niagara River

    She got the last laugh

They will sneak up on you if your not paying attention... Notice the wake boat off to the right in the video.. I saw it but it wasn't moving so I thought I was good.. He must have just come off of the throttle..

I see very few wakeboard or surf boats. One on the people on the next bay south of us has one, but they only use it in the afternoon when there is so much boat traffic that I would never try to go fast anyway. It's the cabin cruisers that I have to watch for. Or rather the wakes that long out of site boats have left behind.

At any rate, I am almost done until spring. The boat is on our marine railway, but the dock is already out. I will wade out to launch for the last time this weekend.

Funny, we have not been below 70 since May,

    64 outside, It feels

    COLD,

I guess 37 years of living in hell has changed me, I used to get season ski passes

I've skied in 5-degree weather in snow Squails,

So when I walked outside at 7 am in a Tshirt I was like wow this is cold, I checked the temp and had a laugh 64

    Must be old age.

I hit a 5' tanker wave at 80 mph and needed to change underwear after that. No fun and $hit happens fast.
