    Nose cone question

Going through the shed I came across A nose cone and wonder if anybody has seen one like it or know what it is. It's made of a hard rubber plastic or some kind of hard molded something it bolts through the lower water inlets has 3 holes for pickup that route to the pickup holes on the lower unit. I bought it many years ago for a 2.4 200 and shortly after got another lower with a low water pickup so never tried it the guy I got it from said it ran on a same motor and it ran 80. Is this any good has anyone seen one of these? Any info is appreciated. Thanks Rick

Can't remember the Mercury part number for it, but yeah I've seen these before. Blocking the top 3 or 4 holes with set screws does the same thing basically. The "scoops" help force water in the pickup and higher engine heights.

More of a conversation/nostalgia piece these days. They did work but no substitute for a coned gearcase.

This is an actual nose cone low water pick-up I agree no substitute for a metal nose cone but a easy fast installable nose cone.

Rick, if you can take a couple pics and send them to me via email here on my profile information page I'll be glad to post them for you. I'd like to see what it looks like, too.

That's it I was told when I bought it they work fine would I take to the speeds we see today no. The guy I bought from claimed 80's but that to me is like the bass boats of old with 150's doing 90. thank you transomstand.

That will work and you will have low water pickups. But it will slow you down. At less than 85mph it not necessary to have a nosecone. You will go faster just plugging the top 3 or 4 holes on a standard lower unit. I picked up 3-4mph after switching from a Bob's cone, propshaft level with the pad to a standard lower with 3 top holes plugged. 1.5" below the pad.
