    Compression test older mercury

I read with cdi ignition you should engage the kill switch to protect cdi. I know little about mercs. I never did on omc's. thanks Rick

Use a starter button to jump the solenoid. Leave the ignition off.

Another stupid question it's ok to hook to the 2 large lugs on the starter solenoid or is it better to use the kill switch and controls I know nothing about mercs and don't want to burn something up. Between a stuck lower unit and not knowing electrics I'm lost on this engine. thanks Rick

Hot big lug and the small terminal with a yellow+red wire. Then you wont cause sparks, you are just activating the solenoid which is carrying the load.

The thing why jumper lead or start box on solenoid is preferred is you can stand next to engine and hold the compression gauge. The two big lugs with a wrench will crank it but, will melt the wrench and make a big spark. A jumper lead as 25 suggests from big red to small yellow/red makes very little spark.
