I have owned several speedmasters but never one like that. Wonder if it worked.

That had to be a one off from the factory or maybe a modification done by someone aftermarket. I always thought tractor units were not legal back then?

Hard to imagine they got water around that front shaft.
Hard to tell how short the driveshaft is but the back is cut off to fit a parker mid like a 75H

I emailed a contact who was involved in the early days of merc racing. He sent it to an old friend who remembers seeing this gear case. Said it was a “ gear engineering project “. Has no recollection of if it was ever tested or not.

One of my early projects that Gary Garbrecht assigned to me was to acquire all the racing outboards and gearcases that were produced by Mercury. He had started it but got me working on it after I started. This tractor gearcase was one of them. I produced a complete written documentation of all the engines and gearcases. Not sure what happened to it when I left Racing. It’s been almost 50 years but from my recollection Elmer Croisent designed this unit. It was tested but I don’t believe ever raced. Performance wasn’t there. The housing started out as the MCI.
