    Blown 2.5 260

Well, this morning I just blew up my 260. Was running about 5000 RPM and a rod took out the #6 side of the block, crap. This was a motor that I purchased last year from a member here. Not putting any blame on anyone, **** happens. The block is done, I don't know if the crank is ok or not, I will have to pull it down to find out. I will have a lot of hopefully good parts left so not all is lost. If anyone hears of a really nice 260 Merc , low hours, please let me know. Also, would a 260 horn intake be compatible with a Pro Max 225 motor?

    Thanks, to all Carter Powell

Carter, don't count the block out so fast, if you have all the pieces I know that the guy who took over Jim Rucks business can probably weld it back together.
You just wouldn't believe the stuff I seen him weld back together. The joke around here is he could weld renalds wrap together if he needed to.
His business name is Mag Machine, if you want I can get you his number. if you don't want to fix it I would be interested in buying it. Also you horn could be put on the pro max I almost would bet

I am not sure if this block could be saved. The number six rod took out the side of the front and back half of the block. The other pistons look fine as well as the bore. The Rod broke about two inches below the wrist pin area. I have taken all the externals off of the block. This week I will pull the block and split it down. The number six hole and piston is toast also. I bought this last year and the seller said it was built by Diamond Marine about three years ago as a spare motor for him. The damn thing ran so good, it only had about eight hours on it. It has the little Diamond Marine paint markings that they put on their builds. I paid $ 7500.00 for it less the ECU from Brucato. What is this thing worth. The block pieces are just small pieces, there are three or four larger pieces but most of the hole was just small stuff. Even if it could be welded getting machine work in the crank sealing ring area would be a real challenge. Stay in touch, Carter

You should listen to Wogi... fixing blocks is what they do; and there aren't very many 2.5 Mercs that are unrepairable.

I've got a buddy who welds them up all the time for a local 2.5L Merc engine builder. It's amazing what he can do with one.

Post some pics of the damage and I'll send them to him to look at. We're a long way from you and the above mentioned shop might be your best course of action, but my buddy wouldn't mind looking at the pics an offering his opinion on the repair.

If it still has the stock merc box you don't run at 5000 rpm. that was the magical don't do it zone.

IF the front isn't whacked all that will bolt on to a pro max but it is going to be fat at idle and slightly fat through 6500 and lazy fat past that.

You can add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and dial down the psi to tune the 260 curve into the promax block. Or just cut the promax block like a 260 lots of guys do that. You can buy pre cut sleeves for this too to make it easy. I believe James Perry mods steel sleeve motors on the regular

It is a Brucato ACU and ran perfectly. I have the same motor on another boat with a Brucato PCU and it has been wonderful for over fifteen years. I will post some pictures in a day or so.

    Thanks guys, Carter

Pretty warm up the road from ya right now. Exhaust pyros might save the next engine.

As far as I know a 260 horn engine is crankcase injection. In order to run a horn on a promax, the block would have to be drilled, and tapped for injectors. No expert, but that is my understanding.

Here's a pretty custom setup on a Pro Max. Someone built a plate to use a horn with the injectors on opposite side of the reeds.
