The Jack Welch model, which still dominates North America, is that corporations exist to boost shareholder value this quarter. Fortunately I am retired so I no longer have to see my employer sacrificing long term profit to boost profit this quarter.

Although I did work for a Japanese Keiretsu company for a while. While profit was important there, it was only second to supporting the mother company. Supporting the mother company came first.

I think it depends on what kind of business you are talking about.
Generally speaking I would think putting out a great product at reasonable cost or providing a service at a reasonable cost.
If you are talking long term then you need product improvement/development and or service improvement/changing needs of customers.

If you provide great customer service plus a quality product, are honest, knowledgeable and trustworthy, the customers will support you. Price becomes irrellivant as long as the customer doesn't feel like they are getting wacked. Also never bring politics or controverse into your business
