I found out what the main problem is that kept causing my server to reboot. Unreal.
Many of you are probably aware that the S&F site was having performance issues, beginning last week, causing it to sporadically become unresponsive. This was a first. Our server admin had maintenance work to perform on the server and it looked like those maintenance tasks were slowing the site down, which is completely normal and the server was due for that. But that turned out to not be the issue. The issue is that TikTok is bombarding the site with an enormous amount of connections. TikTok. What the heck?! I’ll paste a quote from my server admin:
*******
I have checked over your server and I see a massive amount of traffic incoming to screamandfly.com. I looked and today alone over 300,000 requests have been made to this site and the amount of connections is causing Apache to crash. I can raise the Apache limits but that would enable the abuse to increase as well. The traffic is mainly coming from Bytespider, which is the crawler bot for TikTok.
*******
Web crawlers are bots that index websites for things like searching, etc. All search engines have them and they’re necessary for making sure when people perform a search on Google or another web search service that it finds relevant results. But why the heck is TikTok slamming this site (and others) with so many connection? The S&F server would get overloaded with requests and as a safety measure it would reboot. That’s the primary cause of the site not loading sometimes, beginning last week. I had no idea TikTok uses crawlers like that, and I’m such a flagrantly abusive manner.
I’ll update a little later. It’s going to be a long night

Greg, it's like being Sherlock Holmes, just to run a site these days. Another great job.

Would someone be using Tik Tok to harass SnF, or would it be Tik Tok themselves? Weird either way. I am of course too old to care about Tik Tok

That hack was Chinese interference. They are pissed about the postings from 'Nice Pair" because they don't have hot chicks in China

They do, all the time. I despise TikTok and I would be very happy to see it blocked from this country. There are always bots on the internet looking for vulnerabilities in large sites. It's no secret that the CCP engages in that activity on a large scale. All large websites routinely receive malicious attempts to breech them for a variety of reasons, this site included. The larger it became, the more of a target it presented. Over the years there had been some very aggressive methods used to compromise this site, however none succeeded. One particular attack a few years ago was especially aggressive and I shut the site down as a precaution while it was being dealt with. The people that maintain our server really are as good as it gets with security and fast reaction to threats.

And here is what "they" do with all the info gleaned from these sites. Doesn't matter wether you are clicking on boats or bananas.

I agree with donmac. Some of the automotive forums seem to be asleep when compared to SnF.

I had a mail server in the uk in a business there a few years ago, 99% of the spam coming from Holland, no law against it.
Blocked all Dutch IP's and life became normal again not to mention the power consumption from all the software not running at 100%

I think they are trying to learn the secrets of CUDA. Attempting to figure out how anyone could be so in love with our current representative. All I can say is good luck with that-
Greg you do a great job for all of us to come on here and learn, vent, jab, and share our feelings, stories, and hobbies.
