That is the market they want. Very few boats make them a lot of money.

Yamaha has 40% of the outboard market world wide with sales just shy of 3B annually. They have zero motors competing in offshore, zero that will run with Mercury on a top performance level, and very few that are sold for performance applications. They surely have the ability to build something but the market segment is dominated by Mercury as it has been for the last 30+ years. MTI alone plans to install a new 500 nearly everyday for the next 3 years based on current orders-(the race never stops)....

Merc is competing with itself in this segment. The big HP outboards are replacing the big HP inboard. Poker Runs today look nothing like it did 20 years ago. Numbers are up across the board. This years Boyne Thunder registration sold out in 2 minutes. It's crazy awesome seeing 15 people on Center Consoles hauling ass in comfort. Definitely more family friendly than powerboats of the past. Merc got ahead of it. A shame none of the other manufacturers had the foresight.

I hope for mother Mercury’s sake that selling big outboards is more profitable than selling big inboards. It sort of looks like they are competing against themselves.

You have to be rich to own the QC4 motors. They are mind blowing for Performance and reliability but the owners sure do pay for it. Outboards make boating easy.

That's like $200-250K + hanging off the back of each boat. Not including the boat.

Guys that use their 1350/1550 boats spend near that every year on rebuilds and drive maintainance (assuming there is nothing major on the parts list). Everyone is at different levels and I am the first to admit that I can't afford big power--But if I could I would....

Agreed. That is why outboards are so popular.

    Yep.

The new OBs are out of my financial comfort zone too but it doesn’t stop me from drooling over the technology!

    Flat amazing!

Same w/the 1350’s powering dry sump #6 drives.

Add to the cost, the rebuild schedule is, I think, 200 hrs on the motors and 100 on the drives.

Funny too, I’m old enough to remember when to get big power you had to deal w/poor idle quality, constant stalling while shifting, breakdowns etc.

The 1350’s start, idle, shift like mammas mini van!

Their computer matches power level to octane available!

The new OB’s, love them or hate them, have totally changed the future of boating and what was possible!

As in size of hulls capable of OB power and speeds attainable w/stock power!

    Bad asss!

Have to admit though, it does give me a new appreciation of my antiquated 2 strokes that I don’t need a loan for or dealer maintenance.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.
