2-strokes RULE. My Johnson GT200 runs great, tons of power, not too much smoke and a little hard on fuel. Parts are pretty easy to find and usually cheap. It's an '86, I wonder how many 4-strokes will still be running good 38 years from now

Still haven't seen a shred of evidence or even an unsupported claim by any manufacturer that their four-stroke outboards are cleaner (or even as clean as) an Opti or an E-TEC.

How about this direct quote from Mercury's APX competition outboard brochure. Mercury claims a 90% reduction in emissions compared to legacy racing 2 stroke outboards.
Mercury Racing 200 APX is a powerful V6 four stroke outboard designed for UIM F2 and APBA OPC tunnel boat racing. Rated at more than 200 horsepower, the 200 APX outboard offers racers a very durable powerhead and the latest in four-stroke engine technology, while reducing exhaust emissions by 90 percent compared to the legacy two-stroke competition outboards.

How about "legacy" two-strokes has ever referred to direct-injection motors like Opti/E-tec... direct-injection outboards (Optic/Etec) were 3-star rated - at least 90% cleaner than "legacy" (1998 standards) outboards.
Would you like to try again?Last edited by David - WI; 02-08-2024 at 11:52 PM.

That is. In no way, a measure of total harmful emissions though... so this might be a cover up/conspiracy on the same level as VW’s "dieselgate" and Cummins‘ "ramgate" or whatever they're calling it. Did dealers tell customers that four-strokes are "ceaner" than DI two-strokes?

There is just something about 10,000 RPM +, over 100 MPH, less than 500 lbs, floating on a pocket of air or on the pad, coupled with an awesome sound and smell that can never be matched.

I came to this conclusion about 2 yrs ago. Got a few 3.0 efi's and a few opti's too. Then, there's the gaggle of 2.5 and 2.4's.m The new stuff is cool but too rich for me to slap leather on a new one. Yes, I am cheep.

And, I too love the old school smells and sounds.
