boat show sticker shock
I went to the Toronto Boat Show in Monday for the first time in a few years. It's not like I plan to buy a boat, which is good as there were no boats that I would buy there. But I like to look at boats on a winter day and think about summer. And eat an over priced but very good Montreal smoked meat sandwich.
Sticker shock one. A nice little 14' boat, priced at $35,000 US ($46,000 Cdn). Wow. I don't want to pick on these guys, but the video on their web site shows layup with a chopper gun https://www.rossiterboats.com/
Sticker shock two. Run of the mill 20' plus or minus family bowriders going for $60000-$74000 US ($80-$100 Cdn)
The wakeboard/surf boat prices did not surprise me at all, nor did the pontoon boat pricing. I knew those prices could be up there. There are USB ports at every seat in top end wakeboard boats. Apparently the target market can't be away from their phones. One surf boat had a set of additional rudders to allow for better turning while backing up. I thought that was cool.

Yup, its just like an oil refinery in TX has a fire or operational issue and it seems like within hours the price of gas in Maine goes up $.20 a gallon. Its getting so your average working class person gets beat every time he/she turns around. And a vendor/ company standing behind a warranty is also becoming a thing of the past.

What was the price on paddle boats? Or do they even make em anymore? Every paddle boat i see on the lake by me is now electric, lol. Wakeboard boats are insane now. So many cool ideas put into them. They still suck tho, lol.

I get sticker shock on every new boat I look at. A new 16 foot Jon boat and tiller 25hp is over $20,000. Whaaaaa? A new run of the mill 18 foot run about is $40,0000? I saw a pontoon boat that was listed for $320,000! How is that even possible?

Wow, I knew money wasn't worth what it used to be when I saw an 80k pontoon boat. 320k is uncharted territory. That's wild.

One trend that we saw it for U shaped passenger seating. My family all like to seat facing forward whether it's a short ride or a day trip. I suppose the U shape is so people can face each other when hanging around the 'sandbar'. Since we live lakeside, we don't hang around the sandbar. No shade, no food, no washrooms, and not as comfortable as the deck. OK, lucky us, but I would have thought there were enough other people who liked facing forward that some boats would have that option.

I am going Saturday to the NY boat show I am sure it will be crazy pricing- I saw a new 36 foot four winds Cat, family fish/cruising boat expected 900k and it was only 730k- the prices are so high that 730 seemed low when you expect close to a million- imagine the depreciation on a that as you leave the dealer I would say 100k loss immediately. Guess the days of a 10k speed boat are long gone....
20 stoker turn key 6500
21 starliner turn key 6500
22 velocity real nice
all bought on here for less than 10k never happening againLast edited by 282; 01-25-2024 at 11:07 AM.

Pricing finally seems to have found a stopping off point for a little while. Dealers are selling at cost with an additional factory rebate on a lot of boats. Only takes you back about 2 yrs in pricing, which is still crazy high. But at least the increases have stopped for some stuff.

Deals are where you find 'em. Look carefully and be patient and it will pay big dividends.
My son just sold his 23' Caravelle Interceptor. He wanted another well made aluminum boat, but with a 4 stroke. He just bought an 18' Excel with a 115 Yamaha SHO on a nice aluminum trailer for $26K. It only has 18 hrs. on it, still got the break-in oil in it, and has a transferrable warranty on the motor. Great river/sandbar boat.
New?, no. But better than new at a $6-7K "less than new" (2022) price.

I'm still living in yesterday prices. The cost of new stuff is high, unfortunately the quality is mediocre at best, unless you go top shelf. . Looks like I'll be running the Paramount and the Triad for a while.Im ok with it that.
