From the BENETEAU boat factory..
#4 Cees Van Der Velden/Tom Posey won the Paris 6 hours 1979 with Beneteau as the main sponsor.
Here he is with the world famous Madame Roux Beneteau..
"The First Lady Of Yachting" she is one tough leader.

I did race for Beneteau 1979 in Evian, France. That's me in the #56 boat.
I did not get the opportunity to meet Madame Beneteau..

Experimental SST-60 at Kankakee. Randy Minch ran an Evinrude and i ran a Johnson. Both with our Karelsen Sport E none capsule boats for an exhibition. Engines were hopped up with cut heads, hand porting and polished crankcases.
They were about 8 MPH faster than the production SST-60 on a capsule boat.

So on the subject of polished crankcases, maybe I can get a clarification from people who know here. When I was racing 3cyl. V bottoms I built a 49 cu in 75 and hand ported it. While I had the engine apart I polished the inside of the crankcase and I mean it was shiny. Before I put the engine together a couple of people told me that a shiny crankcase in a 2 stroke would be detrimental to the fuel charge as it swirled through the engine. So I went back and bead blasted the gloss off before putting it back together. The engine was a strong runner. But I never did find out who was correct on this subject. Were factory race engines shiny throughout the inside?

Back in the early/mid eighties it was a trend by F1 drivers to have a Rolex..Submariner gold was the most popular one.

Just a note..The Benson & Hedges three boat team could use cigarette sponsorship in the Stockholm GP 1984.
I could not have tobacco or alcohol sponsorship on my boat because I used a Swedish license from the Swedish Power Boat Federation.Last edited by lars strom; 09-27-2023 at 09:24 AM.
