New 500s are proving themselves quickly
The new 500s Mercurys are quickly becoming the top dogs as people work thru getting them set up. Performance Boat Center just ran over 130 MPH with their new 42' cat.
This thing is a massive comfort filled, wave eating, hotrod.
The performance numbers that we have been talking about with outboards is becoming reality (this is good and bad)--people are going to need to use their heads....its getting real

Joe was running 450's on his 36 Doug Wright for the Shootout. He is talking about the new Performance Powerboat 42 with 500's. I/O cats have been far north of 130 for many years with all the same risks. Joe's point is how the speed with O/B power is becoming very impressive.

A common misunderstanding about the Shootout is that many people think the boats are achieving top speed in 3/4 mile. Most of the big fast V hulls and especially the cats are going to run faster with more room. For Joe and his son to run 134 in a 36 DW with 450's is a real testament to the team's setup and driving skill. The boat is capable of higher speed. For the new Performance Powerboat 42' with twin 500 O/B Mercs to run 130 in a short course is mind blowing. I used to have a 32 Skater with twin 525's I/O's that had a top speed of 118 and that took a couple of miles to get to speed. No wonder people are flocking to the new Merc outboards on all style of boats.

Yeah, EVERYTHING is power to weight ratio
Then you add in a large wing as the boat,
I remember in the old days the same motors on a 28 Skater was faster than a 24 Skater
Not to mention the 28s ability to fly over ruff water that would hamper the 24s
But yes a 42ft boat doing 130 in 3/4 mile with outboards is unreal.
Did you see Merc just unveiled two new electric outboards
Six years from now Merc will offer big electric motors, once solid state becomes common.
Their are several versions of solid state on the horizon, so much money to be made
