Seperate Kill Switch to save switch boxes

I am seeing some people with older black maxs around here having switch box problems this year(including myself). I am thinking that older ignition switches and what seems to be higher humidity then usuall might be a culpit. I am thinking of adding a seperate kill switch( relay set up) to use before turn the key off . Does this seem worthwhile?

is your thinking grounding the switch boxes may be overloading them? theoritically possible, i guess.

My motors are “older black maxes” (2.0/150 and 2.4/200), and my two stroke yard tools (blower, whacker, chain saw, etc…) I often shut them down by priming or choking. Then I shut off the ignition in the case of the outboards.

Both of my “older black maxes” are using actual Mercury branded switch boxes (not even Quicksilver but actual Mercury). I’m guessing they’re original from mid-80’s. I have a set of made in Germany, Sierra switch boxes too. People here have reported good things about them.

Boating season is hot and dry where I am. Of course down at water level where the motor runs is still pretty humid, even in the desert.
