Figured out my "leaks through vent hole" issue. I studied the crap out of everything and couldn't really find out why it was leaking through the vent hole. So I was going to begin changing one part at a time until I got it.
My first suspect was the diaphragm, but not because it was torn, hardened or cracked. It wasn't. But what I think was the issue was that around it's very outer rim, the part reinforced by a metal ring, was slightly worn/eroded around the edges, just enough to let water get around it. The new diaphragm fixed it.
