Thanks for posting the video! Looking at this video alone is biased against the DW. I would need to see the inboat cameras of all boats and come to a conclusion. Did the DW driver squeeze or was he running in his lane to the first buoy or do they rules state through the entire 1st turn. They knew the rule apparently whereas they kept a lane through the turn once past the first buoy if the rule states to the first buoy. Keeping track of boats behind you is a tough task even with cameras, and rear view mirrors, roosters enclosed canopy etc. 99.9 % of folks have no idea of that type of environment and limited video observation to draw a conclusion reminds me of todays Main Stream Media.
I don’t see anything flagrant here. The DW kept his lane exiting past the first buoy. Looks like a good Driver IMO. Again more info needed.Last edited by trbocharge; 05-13-2023 at 01:04 PM.

too bad there is not an overhead view, but from what I see in this video at this angle, I would say not only did the red boat squeeze in tight, but the boat on the inside clearly missed the corner and pushed the boat in lane 2 wide. I realize the boat in lane 2 was ahead of the boat in lane 1, but I would like to think, the boat in lane 2 knew the boat in lane 1 was there and decided against turning in and getting run over

Nobody ever enjoys being penalized. I've been on both ends of it. Penalized for crowding in a turn. JC made up the penalty as he was getting an earful from a title sponsors team mate. I have also been run into the center of the course be someone daring me to hit him. He didn't get penalized. Everybody I suspect has seen the Key west mash up a couple years ago. In the old days the race was in open water on long courses. These days its a drag race to turn one. People have been killed in turn one over the years racing. Canopies do not guarantee you won' t get killed.
I am not ashamed to say " I am glad the rules of holding your lane through turn one are finally being enforced." Its especially important when there are a dozen boats all with huge balls wanting to lead. I quit racing over lack of rule enforcement.Jim

You bring up good points Jimbo especially with your offshore winning championships. It’s a good thing someone is finally trying to enforce RULES. I’ve been the rape victim of a world championship after it was declared our competitor was ok to use illegal equipment because there was a misprint in the rule book from 1 year to the other. Imagine that. Not to mention the competitors company was providing High Risk insurance to the organization, but that had nothing to do with it did either, yeaokright.
In regard to this incident, Was it the right call? Thanks

.
you have a good point here @Chaz
I don't mean paint, I mean like lazer lights that shoot at each boat, and when they fall off-lane, an alarm inside the cockpit is sounded?
the lazer lights would be shot onto each boat from the starting line pointed forward
oh man, this is too difficult , just keep your lane till turn-1

So your going 100 mph approaching a floating (moving) balloon in three to six foot seas. Each boat/lane is aprox ten feet wide. In the case of the red DW boat with no one on the inside, they say he moved into lane four. So he was at forty feet from the marker rather than sixty.
Should he have said , we better stay one hundred feet outside, just to be safe ... ???
And go from first to last place ...
Did he/they squeeze it some .. yes .. but it's not like jackhammer did (yes I know who was driving) in Key West when they went from outside to the first lane and spun/crashed most of the field behind them.
Racers and race official's both need to use a little common sense. Don't try to win the race in the first corner and crash half the field. Official's don't toss a racer for moving inside ten - twenty feet .. when no one is inside of them.
That really shouldn't need to be explained ...
And yes, sometimes the umpire will call a strike when the ball is outside the plate. It's part of the game ... if ya can't live with it, you shouldn't be playing ..

A big part of the problem is the short course. When laps were 10 miles or more and the starts had a few miles before the first turn, the boats had a chance to separate some.

Have to agree with ya ..

Long or short .. what do they do. Make a pretty tight 180* hairpin turn and head back up the beach a couple / few hundred yards farther out. Why, good question .. so the spectators that are watching for free can always see the boats.
The Mickey Thompson SCORE race's started in the desert. Barstow to Vegas, then they moved them into stadium's. Main difference is they can now sell tickets.
Hard to please spectators when the race is Miami to Nassau and back.
Again, it's a free show. First time I went, I was kinda shocked they didn't make a 90* turn and head out into open water for at least a few miles before turning back.
People with binoculars could still see the whole thing. Not my soap or my shower, but I don't like running in the surf from one inlet to the next, let alone ever think about trying to race in it ..

Three turn markers instead of two (add an apex buoy) would solve a lot of problems. Every turn I have ever come out of, we aimed for the next marker and would attempt to hold our spacing. It all sounds easy until you get washed, the boat does a slide, or guys close in around you. The DW crew is facing a 60 day suspension but the boat is able to run for points. Who is jumping in the boat this weekend?
