Serial number. Carbs are correct for the engine.

I use several. Crowley Marine is a good one for engine ID.

So, looking at my two 2.4 block fronts. They are horizontal Reeds. The three less than 200 hp motors have vertical reeds. Are all 2.4 motors horizontal reeds? or were the few 2.4 150-175 vertical? Or are all 2.0 vertical reeds? this may be a quick easy identifier. pretty sure it is a 90-some-% thing at the least.

Early 2.4 200 had vertical reeds. Reed arrangement is a clue but not a positive ID. Fuel pump location is also a clue. 2.0 generally have a starboard side pump location, 2.4 are port side. Neither will be definitive.

surprised nobody mentioned it but you can run a magnet tipped flex wire into the cylinders. any hole that is not magnetic is not steel and indicates a 2.4 vice a 2.0. Now... It could still be a 2.4 and be magnetic, but that would mean that all six were repaired by sleeve at some point. I don't imagine that is too common.
