    Smooth Back OSM questions

    1. Is there an ID tag associated with these? I cant find one on mine, nor any place one ever existed.

    2. More important than above, is there no steering stops? When I swivel the mid the lower swivel mount studs hit the bottom of the single ram cylinder. See pics. Is that how these are or am I missing something?

    3. This mid has the single plate and 260 rect tuner. Should I run this on my 200FF powerhead or use the two piece plate and factory 200 tuner?

2 piece will be more versatile and user friendly. Upper motor mount bolts will be sloppy in the tiller arm though, cause the 260 upper bolts are one size bigger. 1/2" instead of 7/16" I believe. Maybe someone makes oversized solid upper mounts? No clue on the stop.

20”? If I recall the steering stops should be under the swivel pin tiller arm up top. With the studs that close makes me wonder if it’s a put together mid. Kinda like how if you don’t run a factory 15” clamp with a 15” can you get interference. That’s why they built the extra 2” of setback in the factory 15” clamp. Post some more pics.

Correct i found the spot it was. I spent a few minutes examining the steering stop issue and it seems this is only a problem trimmed all the way down. Once its trimmed to level i dont think it will hit the ram. Its been sitting in a covered shed for many years. I was worried about possible bolts frozen but they came out no problem, all threads good. You can see the steering stop air gap in the pic below and the missing tag. Aside from someone laying the worst paint job with junk paint, this mid seems to be in excellent shape. The swivel is super smooth and dead nuts tight. No play whatsoever. Plan is to vapour blast and repaint with alodine topped with endura black.

That interference is strange. It looks like you will have a problem when you bolt a gearcase up with the front stud/nut contacting the bottom of the ram? I wonder if there were different lengths long rams through the years…like between early 2.4 rams and later model 2.5 long rams, and this one has been replaced?….maybe Chaz would know that.

Thats what i was wondering if the ram has been changed? I tilted the thing up today and stuffed a board in to hold it and quickly got pulled back into real work so no pics of the ram. Will get some of those tomorrow

Well the good news is it looks like you can run a trim pin/bolt and be safe on anything touching.
