Interesting. No low water pickup on the LU? I'd think that thing would be way out of the water and need one for sure.

    1971 'Race Bred' Evinrude Starflite 125-S V4

Here’s a good example of how racing improves the product for consumers. The ad (center photo)features Cesare Scotti’s winning Molinari #33 tunnel boat running twin Starflite outboards in 1969 at the ‘Outboard World Championship’at Lake Havasu. Scotti of Italy, ran 146 laps – 584 miles – in eight hours at an average speed of 72.54 mph breaking the 1968 record for the event by 9 mph. Scotti ran against the world’s best drivers – many of them running factory sponsored twin and triple rigs.
Second Generation Platform- In 1969, the Johnson & Evinrude V4 engines were completely redesigned from top to bottom and that platform continued to evolve into 1971. The 1971 powerhead was increased to 99.6 cu in. and 125 horsepower. Catalog copy proclaimed that these low-profile outboards complemented your boat - and not overwhelmed it with some “tower of whatever.” In fact, it was much more than that. The Second Generation motors were not only sleeker in appearance, but a total update of the entire outboard. These new engines produced more power, greater thrust, higher speed and most importantly – better fuel economy. All from a motor that was smoother and far quieter. This V4 platform would continue as the leader in the big engine category until the 1976 launch of the V6. The new external design, with minor tweaks, would remain nearly the same until OMC closed its doors.
The 1971 V4 lineup also included 92.6 cu. in. 100 and 85 models with the same styling.

I respecfully disagree that OMC ever "led" the HP race with Mercury. Maybe "tied" with Mercury in 1971 at 135 but Mercury had a 150 hp production outboard at least by 1974. OMC "flatlined" at 135 / 140 hp. However, the lower profile / CG of the V4 135 figured into the formula for the famous James Bond jump boat (GT150). I wonder how the jump would have turned out with a straight 6 hanging on the back?

You apparently aren't up to date on outboard history. Remenber the OMC 150, 175 and 200 HP V-6? and then the 300 HP V-8.

"I respecfully disagree that OMC ever "led" the HP race with Mercury. " This is your quote not mine. No mention of any engine.

Anyone else have any (other) pictures of this boat?
Or the driver (Terry Leatherby) in any of his other boats? I think he raced a boat sponsored by Tracker Marine at one time.
    Thanks in advance

    Terry Leatherby’s Mod50 Broughton.
Terry and Bill Glennon were the Johnson equivalent of Evinrudes Jeff Brown, Tom Ireland team. Last I knew Terry was in northern Wisconsin. The engine is complete and in Illinois. Fast boat and excellent driver.
The pictures I have are not very good.
