Engine working its Ass - Off !!!

Out of Sight out of Mind.

When driving and not visualizing the inner workings of a combustion engine, I dismiss the amount of the continuous repetition happening within the engine, especially the piston movement.

So, for perspective, I did some numerical calculations

I've got a Perkins diesel in a wood chipper I bought new 22 years ago, I thought It was smoked, over 20,000 hours, hour meter quit ten years ago,
just installed new injectors, runs like new, no smoke at all, put 12" log in, eats like candy, I LOVE diesels
I wish I could say that about my Nic block Merc's, Diesel might hit 2,400 RPM, Nic drag motors turn 10,000 +

Hard for me to believe how long diesels run with out wear? Because we are talking HIGH compression ratio's on diesels

What’s even more crazy to think about is that a modern ecm takes dozens of readings every crank angle degree and makes dozens of individual commands every revolution, all precisely timed to the crankshaft. The amount of inputs, calculations, and outputs made per revolution is truly mind boggling.

Engineer Mike, I am still more impressed with mechanical parts, that do such fast repetitions in One Second. The digital speeds and ECM are astonishing too.

Agree.. until i set my own ecu up i had no idea how many inputs to the fuel and ignition maps there were and how fast the corrections are made, like 2000 times a second with a modern 100mhz unit..

Amazing for sure. I find the direct injection engines add another level to the equation. That of the air injector and the metering work it is doing. It is functioning at engine rpm while opening and closing to control compression on one side and rail pressure on the other.

You probably could say it about a Nic block if it was limited to 2400 RPM. You're comparing things that aren't in the same league at all. The amount of wear from 2,400-10,000 is exponential.

Wait a second, I was just talking about rev range, during drag racing It only peak RPM for few seconds, most of ther time It's half that, Diesels just seem to run for ever.

And they have very high compression which in my mind would increase wear.

But they only run at 2000 rpm

Most are turbo charged and have 14 or so to 1 compression. My 1970 R600 Mack is that way. Not sure about the tractors, but every one I have are turbo and intercooled. Even the 70hp baby. Big boy has twin turbos. As far as longevity, one of them has well over 10,000 hours on the original engine less a rod bearing and rod bolt change as preventative maintenance. 2100 is what most turn, and will do it all. day. long.
