Do you recall when Ian got hung up in his little Alison and pretty near drowned? I was the guy who fished him out of that boat. When he flipped his foot got caught in a zip tied loop of electrical cable which tied him to the motor end of the boat. I managed to unhook him from the boat and all was well. He was pretty blue by that time but breathing on his own.

Ian ran the SE a few laps then came in to talk before heading out for a few more laps. We watched him come down the back stretch and spectacularly blow over. We were all really lucky because Ian was not hurt and the boat landed upright after a complete 360. A family that was water skiing brought him in. Dad asked him what happened...Ian said that he hit the trim and it gained 2mph so he hit it again and it gained another 2. So he hit it again... Ian went on to very successfully campaign that boat before selling it to Danny Critchfield, who also blew it over testing.

I do not recall that, but I was young at that time. Was it at the Stadium? Must have been just before he bought the SE.

I think that incident happened in 1974. Ian returned the favor by loaning me his motor for the 74 Nationals to run in SE. I rigged it on my V-bottom McCall and took it to Eufala. There I ran into three problems. Number 1 was none of my props would work with the motor on that little boat. Number 2 at SE class speeds the boat would not turn. And finally the alternator quit working and I couldn't get any run time out of the little battery I had to use in the boat. Wound up going home without running even a lap in competition.
