    Fixing a 40 horse Merc.

Ok, friend calls and says his 40 horse, four cylinder, Tracker Pro Series engine rattled and locked up. We pulled the spark plugs and tried to turn flywheel and no go. Using a screwdriver in plug hole numbers 1 thru 3 move in and out a little bid while wiggling the flywheel, number 4 is stuck solid. He said it was running the best and stated to rattle, then quit. Short story long is, there is a 50 horse, four cylinder stripped power head on ebay for $350, my question is, if I buy the 50 horse, am I asking for trouble by using the 40 horse carbs and electronics on the 50???

If you are referring to the "K4 Mercury Outboard 50HP [500] PowerHead Complete Engine" on ebay, no that is not the same powerhead. The Tracker Pro series I assume is from the mid 90s and has oil injection. If you post a pic or serial it would help.

I believe all the tracker motors came out after they did away with the distributor mount on the front half of the block (this mount was used for a distributor on the early models and just a throttle arm on the later).

The Tracker motors were also a version of the force, so it could be a 40 Tracker built by force/mercury, but I think those were all 2cyl. I think. Pics/serial would help a lot to differentiate.
