Seven Marine Out!

Several years ago, when I was in the Combatant Craft Division of NAVSEA, I met with the principals of Seven Marine. The platform was impressive, but what caught my eye was the potential for a quick and reliable conversion to a diesel powerhead. I think that should have been a priority for them, or Volvo for that matter. A shame to see it die.

Fk volvo and Fk their ceo, too! 7 was an American brand that the guys just kept plowing to make it work. This just sucks. They can shove their Paris climate accord up their Swedish asses!

Wheres the Seven founders? I'm sure they got a wad of cash from Volvo, why don't they restart it or see if they can buy it back for half price?

...same with evinrude. don't understand how the bean counters justify not selling what they have. or they have tried, with no takers possibly.

Maybe there's more there politically(with Evinrude) than meets the eye. Two outboard manufacturers go defunct same year? Volvo states up front in their reasons........zero emissions......with a poo eating grin from the woman ceo on the same page........

Its all part of the Paris Climate agreement..........green act.....tree huggin......in our faces.....it says so right on the heading of the article. Outboards are in trouble men!! Going to post a thread in politics on this.

Guys, it probably played out like this:

Step 1: Seven Marine owners hear rumors about the coming Mercury V8 platform and realize that now is a good time to sell the company
Step 2: A broker runs a selling process, and the highest bidder is Volvo
Step 3: After taking control of Seven Marine, Volvo develops a business plan to accelerate growth
Step 4: The launch of the Mercury V8 platform and COVID mean that Seven Marine today is nowhere near where it was supposed to be in that business plan
Step 5: Volvo assesses what it would take to make Seven Marine competitive with Mercury, and decides that it is not willing to spend that money
Step 6: Volvo tries to sell the business, but there are no buyers. After all, anyone who wanted to buy an outboard business would have bought Evinrude, but it was not possible to sell either
Step 7: Seven Marine is shut down

While many members of S&F have had a hard time accepting it, the Mercury V8 platform is off-the-charts competitive.

Of course they tried.

Potential bidders have sniffed at the assets and said "no thank you" or "we will take it if you pay us".

If outboard engine manufacturing had been a strategic industry for the Chinese, there would have been a long line of bidders. But it seems like they think they can modernize their society without outboard engine technology. At the heart of the Volvo Group are Diesel engines in this size range:

I am not sure a 2600 lb+ 500 hp diesel powerhead would have all that many applications...

Marcus, gotta disagree with you completely............the ceo stated its about zero emissions.......that means the reasons for shutting it down were tree hugging reasons. We can speculate alot, but when the ceo flat out admits its because of emissions..........done deal.

I am quoting from the page, "Earlier this week the Volvo Group announced the ambition to be a net-zero emissions company, by2050, at the very latest. In order to be transparent on its progress, the company is committing to the science based targets initiative. Targets and roadmaps will be established in 2021". It says in the next paragraph .......through the use of fossil free fuels....

Marcus, you are a Swede and all. I get it. But Volvo is in cahoots with the Paris agreement or your govt is leaning on them to make them that. Either way, your country is part of the global tree huggin association............

Or, they KNOW something we don't. The big mfg's are way ahead of the public's knowledge of what lies ahead business model wise. Boats and performance boats esp. are in the crosshairs of every liberal segment of all the world's govts. The US is the last holdout, (thanks to Trump) and with the biden/harris agenda in plain view not much is hidden if you look and listen closely. I don't want to make this political, but it is unavoidable with the worlds "green" views expanding constantly.

Boating has never been so popular, all due to covid. I wonder why they would not run it just to take advantage of the market for now.

Don't think 7marine would benefit much for the latest boat buying craze. They're a niche market product, most people just buy the package deals nowadays. Maybe it would be a rising tide thing, who knows? As has been said, Mercury's new product lineup is in line with today's buyers. With the exception of the very small market of manufacturer's that are on this site, can you even buy a boat not in a complete package (motor, rigging, etc)?

...or...or...or...lol. maybe, just maybe, the volvo ceo had to come up with semi-believable, semi logical excuse for stopping production, due to lack of supply from gm, zf transmissions, gearcase gears/shafts, diecast parts, fiberglass parts, stainless headers, specialized fasteners, wiring harness related parts, logistics of assembly & shipping finished product...etc.? if just one of these major items can't be had, going forward, then the train stops. who the fruck knows what the "true" reason is/was?

...hey, the black ones made in america are still available...
