Ok, so now you got me wondering if this motor I have is gonna be a dog. I have a 1987 Valero v-pad with a low hour very good running 1985 Mariner 175hp, the boat does 75mph for sure and will probably do more with a better driver than me. Let’s say I take that motor off and put my 235hp on. Let’s also say both motors are bone stock and running strong for their age. What should be expected of the 235 on this boat? Would there be a difference out of the hole and top end when comparing the two motors? Now I’m not really going to do this as the 235 is intended to go on the 1977 Ventura I’m restoring. Also both motors are fairly close in weight I think.

Those mid 80`s 2.4 175hp Mercs have a lot of low end power because of the vertical front. The 235 should be the faster engine tho.

Methinks the 235 is gonna be much heavier than the Merc. That 175 can be a 200 with a front 1/2 swap. Plenty of blown 2.4 200's out there to scavenge parts off of...

I will say the 175 on my Valero does everything I want it too, plenty fast and fun. All I’m hoping for is the 235 on the Ventura will give me that same feeling but be a tad faster and put me on that ragged edge a little sooner when I feel the need.

That 235 weighs the same as that 175 Merc. Truth be told, it weighs the same as a 150 'rude crossflow........same everything except for the bubbleback and larger bores...........same block......same crank. Splitting hairs..........the 235 is 5-7 lbs heavier. I bet that 235 looks better and better now!!! I promise you, it will scream. Give it fuel, and get some unlimited powerpacks and some reeds. Right now, you have 5800 packs on there. You need hear that thing run above 6000.......you'll be a changed man.......I was. A merc dont sound anything like that.

Pay no attention to the 95 lbs compression(as to think its a dog). Almost every v6 crossflow ran with those numbers(unless it was a special edition motor) in the 80's. The tight heads(all v6's) were in the 1970's. You can mill the lip off of your heads to bump compression a little. ONly the v4's had higher compression. their 120 number was the v6's 95 number. Tight for a v4 was 140 and tight for a v6 was 110-120 depending on the head. A lot of people dont come to know that about the crossflows from the factory from the 80's. This is stock head compression numbers, not cut or modified heads.
Omc even had a low compression head that was worse back then.
Lastly, the 160 cubic inches is a BIG plus!!! Its gonna have really good torque to get ya moving. The 175 merc will not have anything on the 235....

I see this is an old thread but how did your project turn out. Did you use the 235 and if so did you make any mods to the 235.
