Ugh - May need to sell the Viper - AGAIN

Some of you know my story by now. The long crazy story with my boat. Wife bought it for me when out of town, used it...sold it - got it back (twice)....Anyway...spent the week in the hospital last week. Thanks to the "affordable care act" my care is no longer affordable. I'm going to need some cash soon.

So, the one thing that can go is this boat - I know it isn't worth much...but any ideas before I toss it out there for sale? I've spent WAY more than it is worth re-doing it. $1,800 on the interior alone this year.

Here is where we are:

1984 Hydrostream Viper - 1990 Shorelander trailer - 1979 Mercury 115

Boat:
Transom replaced with Seacast in 2007
Has a custom aluminum mount plate (was there when I got it in 2006)
Main floor replaced with marine plywood and fiberglass 2007
Re-wired 2018
Seats recovered 2020 with all new foam
Custom stainless swim ladder installed 2019
Bimini top assembly installed new 2019
New bilge pump (auto and manual) 2018
New Speed/Tach 2018
New steering cable 2018
New steering wheel and rack 2018
Optima forward mount battery 2019 on custom Optima billet mounting bracket

Trailer:
New Tires 2018
New LED light kit 2018
New wheel bearings/seals 2018 (bearing buddies already installed)
New wood and carpet wrapped bunks 2018
New rollers 2018

Motor:
CDI coils, ignition packs, pick up, trigger 2018
plug wires 2018
CDI complete engine harness 2018
Plugs 2018
Carbs rebuilt 2018
Fuel lines 2018
Fuel pump 2018
water pump (yearly)
lower unit replaced (salvage/rebuilt unit) 2019
19" quick silver aluminum prop 2018
21" Laser II prop (needs a new hub installed)
Lift hydraulic rebuilt (professional rebuild) 2019
Shift throttle cables 2018
Starter Solenoid 2018
tilt/trim hoses 2018
tilt/trim motor/pump assembly 2020 (aftermarket)
control box rebuild with neutral safety switch 2020
two 6 gallon portable tanks (both relocated to rear of boat)


I've come through a ton of pain and frustration to get it all together and working. The only thing not hooked up is the cut off switch for the tilt/trim (I honestly am not sure how to wire that in) - but the micro switch and bracket is on the motor. Wish it had a trim gauge - but they tell me that these models didn't have a sensor provision for that.

I'm missing a dozen small things that we've done for sure - paint is getting thin - it will polish out decent but not perfect.

That's a financial beating to sell at such a loss. Do you own a house? Equity line? Any other assets to borrow against? Credit card? Look at it as a cost of capital equation. The only way you extract the value of what you've dumped into the boat is by personal use and enjoyment. If you have say 7k in it and sell for half that you're looking at a 100% cost of capital. If you keep the boat, borrow elsewhere at a lower cost and get to enjoy the boat you could arguably be better off. I know that's not the Dave Ramsey approach but if you have sufficient cash flow to pay off the med bills over time and keep the boat you dont realize the immediate loss on what you've "invested" in the boat. Most medical bill folks will work out a payment plan. They'd rather get their money over time than risk not getting it at all. Anyway, just some thoughts to consider. If you are done with boating forever, sell it, but if you want to get back into it, keeping what you've got may be your cheapest option.

Not bad advice. I knew I'd take a beating on this boat no matter what. I'm not too hung up on that, as much as pricing it right so I'm not giving it away, but I also don't want it for sale all the way to the end of the season because I've over-shot the market. I see them few and far between but most are total rags...and then there are the race versions...few in-between. Makes it hard to price right because those ragged out ones drag the whole market down. And, a buyer for something this old has to pay cash.

I've got a ported promax block bout come back from James Perry and just picked up a sporty , had plans put it on little cmate , but the little viper lookin good! Haha

Call the hospital, negotiate a payment plan. They usually don’t care how much each month as long as it’s EACH month. It’s sure worth a try. $20/ month is not out of the question.

I dont know myself , I tell him what I'm lookin for and he guarentee me a runner. haha. I do know it got more than last motor we did , I'm sure I can ask and find out tho , he did one that's on a xb turnin 7700 with a 27 little over 103ish mph. Think he has 1.62 gear tho. He doin same map he did for that one

Yea I say go on a payment plan with the doctors/hospital/collections...is 3500 Immediately really going to help you out? How much are your total doctor bills?
