Mercury Through The Years...

Does anybody have info on any of the models used in the catalog photo shoots? Mercury Marine employees? Modeling Agencies? Where are they now? Names? Parents (kids)? Grandparents? etc. I think the only reference I've ever seen on S&F to a catalog model was the fellow who represented the Black Max theme passing away?

The Rabe family were in a few, Parker and his mom are still doing fine.

The El Camino in this picture is a 67 or earlier and the motor appears to be a 4 cylinder with stacks. At that time Mercury only made 2 4 cyl motors. that would make this motor either a 500 or a 650. The offshore boat in the background could further date this picture. Was this the only time they tested this "boat"?

The motors on the offshore boat have 1969 model year decals.

This boat would seem to solve the wetted area issue at the expense of maintaining some proximity to the water. I recall a few tunnel boat designs with the same problem.

What does Elmer have to say about this photo? As I mentioned, I could be totally wrong, but I thought they hired a pilot to do the testing. I also think this was 68 or 69. Can he identify the people in the picture? Is this the boat that he 'flew'?

By the tail is Bubby Cartwright from Merc Plant 6. Hugh Gilgenbach was involved in the propeller design but I don't recognize him.

CONTROL??

For years---the control surface on the Switzer WING has been called so many names-even by the Brothers----

FLAP? AILERON? STABILIZER? FLAPERON?

I have always called the CONTROL surface an ELEVATOR---- controllable from the cockpit--

I'm sure MIKE BUTLER would agree this looks like the tail of a V Bonanza--

Angle of attack controlled from the cockpit--trim tabs adjusted on the ground--

The driver becomes an AVIATOR----

Wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong, but I sure thought they hired a pilot to drive/fly that contraption. Maybe they did and after he crashed a couple of times gave the honor to Elmer? I think I see Ted Jones, second from left wearing shades, don't recognize Elmer Nord in this photo.
