When I started out most of that stuff was just not available over the counter. You either had to make it yourself or find someone who could.

You really had to do your homework with finding a dealer who could order this stuff. Inventory of this kind was NEVER stocked. I ordered the "new" breakaway steering assembly. It cost me a fortune in 1976 dollars and being just 21 years old at the time. Whatever I could not afford, I made it myself.
