Also if you want to try and start it get a control box and battery cables hooked up would not try it without. If the motor runs I would highly recommend putting a water pump on it and removing the vro system unless you know the vro system is new

Update on motor
I have had a couple Marine Mechanics come take a look at it...the first was not much help as he came with pretty much nothing regarding tools...$100/30 minutes of scratching his head. Yesterday, a very good Mechanic arrived with a truck full of anything we could need and 50 years of experience...
Great guy, very very knowledgeable...He did get the motor running and it sounded ok. Did compression and 1 cylinder was bad. Pulled head off and two cylinders were scored so on to another motor...only charged me $100 for what I felt was a lot of work and great service., (see details below).disappointed as I wanted to run the classic Evinrude power.
So, I have a 20" lower unit and mid, and all other parts in non-saltwater used motor. Trim and Tilt, Heads, rebuilt carbs, stainless prop etc. etc. Any idea what they might be worth to the right people? I will remove and ship anywhere...Need to put some money together to put towards another motor.
Great and knowledgeable people.

Dreamer: Post pics of the ‘84 you’re looking at or possibly buying. I hope you find it to be a good motor. I have an ‘84 235 too. I love these old OMC motors. I haven’t had a chance to run mine yet as I am finishing a complete restoration of a 1979 Allison GT-20 with the ‘84 235 OMC engine. Hopefully, it’ll be all done this summer.

The original motor for your boat is a 20" shaft, the second one is a 25" shaft. You might want to swap the power heads so you can run the 20" shaft on your boat.

Good plan buying one the same. Some of the electronics on these get expensive.I'm running an 89 Evinrude 200 XP that the reg/rec was smoked on and I think I smoked it again late last summer before I figured out the ign switch was bad.I think I payed over $300 for the part.Water cooled regulators suck IMHO.
If I knew it was going to last this long I would have taken better care of it.

You need to swap over the heads, the carbs, all the electronics. Even though they are both 235's, the internals are different. The intake needs to be swapped too if you want the composite reeds off of it. Hot rod 235 vs a stocker. Jetting is way different too. Can you post a picture or two of the bad block with the inspection covers off? The xp electrics are better.......speaking from the place of making more power. The main jets will need to be changed though..............since that 235 doesn't share the same (more) porting of the xp motor. I say this is because those heads on the bad motor raise compression substantially!! It will need more fuel. But it wont need all the fuel that those mains will be letting in.
The bottom line is, you want all the goodies off of the other motor. Keep it for parts. They are hard to find and getting harder. I am speaking from experience. I am dying to find a 235 xp. They are rare and getting rarer. Sell all the 25 inch stuff.
Truth be told, you should get that motor bored and rebuild it. They are factory ported to make much more power than what that other motor is. The difference is night and day in power between the two. JMHO. However, I don't know if it has stock bores or has been redone b4.
